TVTEAR THE end of a tense golf match, one of the con-
' testants, very temperamental, was thrown off his game
when his caddie developed a severe attack of hiccoughs. On
the seventeenth hole, he
sliced his drive clean out
of bounds, and growled
fiercely at the caddie,
"That was on account of
you and your hic
coughs." "But I didn't
hiccough then, sir," pro
tested the caddie. "That's
just the point," scream
ed the player. "I had
ALLOWED for it!"
Senator Borah of Idaho
mailed out more letters to
constituents than any of
his colleagues and the bulk of tjicni went to his bitterest politi
cal enemies. "No point In sending copies of my speeches to
' friends who already agree with me," Borah explained. "My ene
mies, however, read every word I say looking for mistakes."
"I'm a man of few words," thundered a pompous congressman
tn the House one day.
"Could be," chuckled a congressman across the aisle, "but
you're keeping them mighty busy."

Cherries Lacking
In Cherry Pies
Washington -IUPII- The pic
ture on the frozen cherry pic
package showed a luscious pie
wedge with 34 mouth-watering
cherries visible.
But Sen. Philip A. Hart (D
Mlch.) said today that when
he investigated he found the
whole eight-inch pic contain
ed only 40 cherries.
"They were only one cher
ry deep and even then the
cherries weren't packed light
ly slde-by-slde but were swim
ming in a thin paste appar
ently composed of corn
starch." he reported.
Hart, sponsor of the "Irulh
In packaging" bill now before
Congress and whose home
state produces 80 per cent
of the nation's cherry crop,
was indignant.
"I am going lo ask I h c
Food and Drug Administra
tion lo set some standard on
how many cherries a pic
should contain," he said.
Hart said a 10-inch pic from
the Senate cafeteria contain
ed 1G3 cherries, lie figured
that nn this basis, an flight
Inch pic baked in the Senate
kitchen "would contain about
108 cherries, compared lo the
40 lonely cherries in the fro
zen model."
The FDA has tin- power tu
set standard? of content, Hart
said.

Northern Oregon
Portland -illPIl- Two rescues
occurred east of here during
the week end - one after a
dog accidentally knocked a
youth into a ISO-foot ravine
and the other when two teen
agers got stranded on a cliff
near Multnomah Falls.
Edwin Miller. 20, Grcpham,
was knocked off his feet by
his full grown collie dog into
the ravine along the Sandy
river late Saturday. A doctor
and sheriff's deputies were
lowered by ropes and spent
the night with him.
He was reported in "fair"
condition in a hospital with
multiple fractures and other
injuries. He was brought out
of the ravine early Sunday.
His brother, Kenneth, 23,
said the two were planning to
get down to the river and
camp until dawn, then go
fishing.
Dog Lost Footing
Kenneth said the dog ap
parently lost its footing and
slid, knocking Edwin's feet
from under him. He said the
dog jumped after its master
and was killed.
James Stewart, 14, and
Dclorcs Pugh, 13, both of
Portland, were stranded for
about two hours Sunday eve
ning sonic 600 feet up a bluff
a mile cast of Multnomah
Falls. Deputies said the boy
had dropped a .22 rifle and
got stuck when he wcnl to
get it. The girl tried to reach
him and got within 200 feet
svhen it got dark.
Both held onto roots and
branches until res cures se
cured a rope to the top of the
cliff and pulled them up.
Deputy Sheriff Jack
Kraushaar said young Stew
art could not have held on
