America's Top 20 Attractions to See by Car fCi s ren are the Tricorn Hat Tours, while nighttime walking tours, with the way lighted by colonial lanterns, are popular with young and old. Carlsbad Caverns These caverns in the rugged foot hills of New Mexico's Guadalupe Mountains are so extensive they have not yet been fully explored. A re markable attraction is seen each evening at dusk between May and October, when thousands of bats emerge from Bat Cave. A talk on the bats is given each evening by a park naturalist. Maw Orleans The home of the French Quarter and the Mardi Gras celebration has a pair of new attractions. One is a Jazz Museum displaying artifacts and instruments connected with great jazz musicians of the past. An other is Preservation Hall, a spot where jazz musicians, old and new, gather for nightly concerts. The Black Hills Interest in this area of the Dakotas was spurred by the completion of the Mt Rushmore National Memorial the carved likenesses in the moun tain's solid granite of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. An even more ambitious sculpture is under way on Thunder head Mountain, a few miles away. This will be a truly monumental, 560-foot-high likeness of Chief Crazy Horse astride his mount. Maw England Heritage Trail This 2,999-mile route meanders among New England's famed spots of history. The main trail stretches from Bangor, Me., to Norwalk, Conn., by two routes. (There also are several side trails into mountains and lake country.) It covers battlefields, mu seums, historic homes, flower gar dens, wilderness areas, rivers, water falls, and seashores. Great Smoky Mountains Long a popular summer vacation spot, the Smokies have turned into a full-fledged winter resort complete with ski lodge, ice-skating rink, and heated swimming pools. In summer, the Great Smokies are noted for their fine horseback and hiking trails, hunting, and fishing.
