Youth Symphony Group To Make Tour of Japan Br RODNEY GUILFOIL San Francisco-WW-A group of youngsters in the San Fran cisco Bay area are making plans for a summer of hard work - but they're wildly ex cited about it They are members of the California Youth Symphony orchestra and they have been Invited on a month-long tour of Japan beginning July 20 The trip is being sponsored by the Asahi newspaper group, which also sponsors a number of youth orchestras in Japan The California Youth Sym phony orchestra is composed of 104 amateur musicians who play to professional standards The reason is that their con ductor, Russian-born Aaron Sten, insists on nothing less No Auditions "I never conduct auditions for the orchestra," Sten said. "But our orchestra has devel oped such high standards since it was founded in 1952 that any youngster wanting to join us starts working hard long before, so he'll be tech nically equipped. ' The orchestra rehearses ev ery Saturday at Foothill Col lege in Los Altos, suburb of San Francisco. It rehearses 12 months of the year and even twice a week during Christmas vacation. During the summer, the youngsters go to camp in the High Sierra. The orchestra gives six with a number of special con certs. The boys and girls range in age from 11 to 18. "And we don't play any easy abridgements either Sten said. "We play the stand ard symphonic repe r t o i r e. with emphasis on Mozart and Beethoven. We play every work In lb entirety and I don't let anyone skimp at the hard parts. Branch Out "Right now, I'm letting the orchestra branch out a little. We're working on Walter Pis ton's Fourth symphony, a complex and difficult work with many variations in rhythm." Stcn's musicians are en thusiastic. For example, Linda Wynn of Millbrae - a pretty and petite 16-ycar-old blonde regular concerts a year, along who plays first violin - said she sometimes gets tired of Dvorak or Tchaikowsky. "I love the Piston sym phony because it's a great challenge," she said. But Sten said that since he's dealing with fledgling musicians, he must emphasize the classics so his players will get a thorough grounding in their musical fundamentals. And he's a bear on accuracy - accuracy of pitch. Intonation and attack. Infectious Vigor For example, a recording the orchestra made of Dvorak's "New World" sym phony shows it lias a profes sionally strong attack in its phrasing and an authoritative command of rbythm. Nor does the orchestra neglect tonal qualities. And with its profes sional sound, the young musi cians play with infectious vigor. A number of the orchestra members intend to be pro fessional musicians and music teachers, but many do not. "The purpose of the orches tra," Sten said, "is to broaden the children's musical educa tion, to give theni something that will enrich them for the rest of their lives." KEYNOTES No stooping, less fatigue and a minimum of work keynotes the design of appliances and built-ins for kitchen modernization. Cooking utensils, too, save time and work as they travel directly from freezer to oven, broiler or stove top then smartly to the tabic. Cooking Utcnclls by Cornlni Ware Children Should Help Choose Home, Is Claim Chicago - DPI - A grand mother who has added a fem inine touch to the field of real estate finance advises parents to let their children help choose the family's new home. Sylvia A. Miedema, pres ident of the Clyde Saving and Loan association in sub urban Cicero and a leading Chicago area land subdivider, has strong views on how houses should be bought and sold. She is putting her ideas into action at her third major housing development, the 1,000-home Maplebrook com munity in nearby Naperville, 111. "Our salemen have been instructed to pay attention to the needs of the entire fam ily," she says, "In order to match the family to the exact house, we need to know their interests and activities, both present and future. "For example, if there are small children, it's obvious thai in a few years there will be need for a recreation room for teenage parties. If the family likes music, we sug gest installing the equipment for piping in hi-fi during con struction, not after." Above all, the Maplebrook salemen encourage the "fam ily conference," at which all members participate in the se lection of the kind of house the group wants to occupy. "After all," Mrs. Miedema says, "it will be the young sters' home just as much as it is the parents. And, as a matter of fact, it is more dif fucult for children to adjust to a new residence than it is for the adults, who probably have changed abodes many times during their lives," Mrs. Miedema, who became president of Clyde Saving and Loan in 1937 and has seen its assets grow from $200,000 to nearly $100 million, believes the family housing conference can give choldren a wonderful opportunity to learn "the financial facts of life,'1 Should Know "There is no reason why they shouldn't know what the house will cost, and this is a good tme for them to learn about mortgages, down pay ment, earnest money, interest rates and all the other details of home financing," she says "In this way they will apprec iaie their new home much more. They will know the sacrifice and thrift involved in providing them with home. The main thing in con ducting a family meeting of this kind is to draw the child ren out," Mrs. Meidcma says "Let them know that their ideas are considered import ant and that their opinions are thoroughly respected.' Three Indicted for Assault, Battery Pendleton - it'Pli - Three youths were indicted on charges of assault and battery by the Umatilla county grand jury Tuesday. They are Charles Kearney Jr.. 21, McMinnviile; Eric Ja cobsen, 18, and Neal Winters, 20, both of Pendleton. The youths are charged with assaulting Dennis Hach ler, 28, Pendleton, at Pendle ton last Friday night. Hachler was hospitalized. They each posted $1,500 bail. 'Disgusted' Actor Faces Firearm Charge Hollywood - HH - Actor Damon Knight, who appears on the "Combat" television series, today faced charges of discharging a firearm within the city limits. Knight, 27, was jailed Tues day after neighbors c o m plained he was shooting into the brush behind his apart ment. Arresting officers iaid Knight fired his revolver into a closet door when they ar rived, ripping holes in five suits. "I'm just disgusted," was the actor's explanation. "You wouldn't understand." TREE PRUNING Pruning Most trees re quire periodical pruning in order to keep their shape. Dead limbs and branches also need to be removed. Small trees that can be reached by standing on the ground, or possibly on a stepladder, may be pruned safely by the home owner. Pruning of large trees is dangerous, however, and is not recommended.
