San Franclsco-IUPli-The San Francisco Giants today re turned to windy Candlestick park the place where they won the National League flag. Last year, the Giants com piled a spectacular 61 21 mark in the much discussed ballpark and a full house of 40,000-plui was certain to fhow up for today's home opener against Houston, un less rain washed out the pro ceedings. - Manager AI Dark held out the brilliant southpaw-, Silly Fierce, all last week to enable him to pitch the home opener. Last year Pierce was 12-0 during the season at Candlestick Park and won number 13 against the New York Yanks In the World Series. Houston named Bob Bruce as its starter. The Giants were 4-1 on the road last week and moved in to a tie for first in the crowd ed National League chase, but Dark is not happy with his troops' performance to date. The Giants power boys have been carrying the team with Felipe Alou, Orlando Cepeda and Willie McCovey all hitting .400 or better. Wil lie Mays is hitting only .222 but has hit two homers and scored six runs. What has distressed Dark has been the collapse of his infield both in the field and at the plate. Catcher Tom Hal- ler is hitting .158, second sacker Chuck Hiller and third Baseman Jim Davenport .14a each, and Jose Pagan .053. Besides not hitting, they have been making errors and misplays of a kind that no team can get away with against ton-flight competition. "Potentially, we are just as strong as last year, maybe stronger. But the others have improved, too. We'll have to do better,'' Dark says. More than 100,000 fans turned out to welcome the team home Monday In a brief parade through the down town section. After the reception, the Gi ants headed (or Candlestick Park but found it too soggy for a workout The Giants ? it good news when Matty Alou, the ailing reserve outfielder whoso left knee has buckled twice, escap ed an operation. Dr. Floyd Jergesen examin ed him and called Alou's in jury "minor cartilage dam age," Otherwise, the Giants were in good condition for their 14-gamc home stand. Follow ing Houston, they meet Chi cago, Cincinnati, St, Louis and Milwaukee. Dark says Billy O'Dell and Sanford will pitch Wednesday and Thursday. NATIONAL LI w.lt W. Tlie regular contest ended 7-7 after nine innings and the Beavers seemed to wrap things up with three in the 11th. But old pro Ray Jablon sky's homer sparked a three run Ranger burst in the 11th. Bruce Swango, a busy re liever who seems to figure in just about every Dallas-Ft. Worth decision, got the win, while Bill Kitk took the loss. Jay Ward of the Rangers crashed a pair of homers and Portland's Bill Kern also lost one in a wild battle that saw a dozen pitchers touched for 33 hits. In other action Monday night, San Diego nudged Spo kane 3-2 in 13 innings, Seattle slid by Oklahoma City 6-5, and Salt Lake was again washed out at stormy Hono lulu. Deron Johnson did most of the damage for San Diego. He followed Art Shamsky's triple with a single in the 13th after having delivered a big single during the Padres' two-run rally in the seventh. The former USC athletic ace John Werhas drove in both the loser's runs. Dick Luebke, third Padre hurler, picked up the win after a nice relief job. Seattle broke a 5-5 tie at Oklahoma City with a run in the top of the ninth. Archie Skeen led off with a double, took third on a sacrifice play and then went home on a long drive by Rac Slider. Dave Roberts and John Weekly homered for the los ers, who absorbed their first defeat after two wins. People really want newspaper advertising and have said so. Surveys usually show well over SOri in favor of newspaper advertising; less than 70rc for magazines ; and under 40rc in favor of advertising on radio and TV. Your advertising's first job is to win a friendly feeling for your product. It stands to reason you will win more friends by running your advertising where most people want it. If you want to sell more people you have to reach them when they are receptive. Newspapers reach more of the most receptive people. Medford Tribune
