We had watched and noticed the youngster was par tially born. During the inter val of delayed birth the pros pective mother pursued her accustomed way, blandly as suming a state of indifference. She, being a porpoise, knew more about the biological or der of birth than the humans who watched. We were pan icked by ignorance. And he was born swimming, just as active as a "cricket." The second the birth was complete, Mrs. Porpoise turned, put her bottle-like snout under the youngster's stomach and pushed him quickly to the surface. We could plainly hear the first baby gasp as the little guy gulped his very first lungful of air. We may have imagined it, but il Itemed to us that the mother heaved a sigh of rcliel at the baliy's gasp. She ap peared to have a look ql con cern Just before Ihe welcome, bubbling gutp. Like all devoted relatives and friends of the family, we were anxious to find out how much the youngster weighed, how long he was and what ever pertinent facts we could discover about this little stranger just born in an un usual environment-a concrete tank instead of the open sea. Displays Confidence Once again his wise motheV displaycd her confidence in her human friends by actually leading junior into our wait ing hands as soon as she un derstood what we had in mind. Copyrlfht 1963 General reatuiea Corp. Donald P. I think fraternities are for the frightened. Mr. H. P. He'll be better off if- he joins mine. Donald P. It's my Dad's fondest hope that I join the Greek-letter fraternity at college to which he belonged, even though it was another chapter and an other era. They're a nice enough bunch, but I don't need that sort of a crutch. It's like saying hello to yourself every day and I'd rather say hello to a wider circle. There's something sacred and snob bish about fraternities. I don't need or want that sort of pro tection. I can make friends on my own . Mr. H. P. Each generation of my fam ily has had at least one man in Kappa Alpha, the oldest of them all. There's nothing like it to help a young fellow grow socially. My two closest friends, to this day, are men I met first as fraternity bro Ihcrs. Dot Don knows I have other friends too. It's just that at 19 he's foolish to turn down a ready-made circle of bud flies. They constitute a core of wonderful contacts for the real of his life. e The Council: According to a University of Michigan survey, there's the "fraternity type" and the non-fraternity fellow. The former is described as an ex trovert, athlete, politician, and undistinguished scholar. Non-members, on the average, get higher grades, are more creative, original, non-conformist. The consensus is that fraternities, while a good thing, will get less and less important on campuses. Everything must come to an end, Mr. P., and if Don chooses to have the old tic end with him, please, no moaning at the bar. Blame it on his mother's side of the family, but he prefers to furrow out his own circles of associates rather than inherit them. In addition to growing socially, he's out to grow intellectually and emotionally, "You don't make fraternity men out ot people with broad horizons," declared a Williams College professor recently, Well, there are except ions to that view, bill Don isn't aiming to he one. We think he'll make the right "contacts," Mr. P., on his own and as your son rather than your "brother."
