Next to the death' cap was another bad actor. Just a poisonous-the "panther Mar ie" commonly celled the "fly mushroom." !J Point by point wc surveyed the feature of both. They stood up from the forest floor about six Inches: each had a spherical base, roughly set in the familiar "death cap" which was, in several speci mens, Just above the surface of the ground. Pal Whlia The color was a pale white; , the gills were white and free from the stem. Some had pale greenish yellow caps. B y every identifying trade mark wc could apply to them, they were destroying angels. Wc turned our attention to tile other variety growing in this same environment, the "fly mushrooms" or Amanita muscarla. The caps on some of these were all of six inches across, of a reddish-orange color and sprinkled with red dish bumps or warts. The stem is bulbous and decorated with untidy rings. This mushroom, one of the largest in any woodlund, is deadly poison ous. Yet on these, too, the garden slugs were busily feasting. To a human, eating even a small piece of cither of these mushrooms can cause Illness or even death. It hardly seemed possible that lowly garden slugs could eat this material with impunity. Per haps the poor dopes were hun gry and their instinct had failed them, and they were committing suicide. So, we carefully gathered i. ill a dozen of them, along with the mushrooms they Make this lovely alghan, pillow a summer project! Quick to do in separate blocks. London UPli Dr. Michael Ramsey, Anglican archbishop ol Canterbury, will lecture at the Roman Catholic univer sity of Louvain in Belgium May 2, it was announced Wednesday. It was the lirst time an Anglican primate had been invited to lecture at a Roman Catholic school. Many people have eaten poisonous mushrooms and have died. These mushrooms arc dangerous because the vic tim gives no indication of poi soning until it is too late to give first aid. If you like the taste of mushrooms (and what they do for aleak is of course, "out of this world,") you would do well to purchase them from the grocery store, or be very sure of your mushroom Identi fication. And even when you arc sure, it' best to be ex ceedingly critical and cau tious, for the Amanita genua of mushrooms were aptly named - destroying angels or death' cap. if you like that name better.
