UNITED WW fXTgA cam Amimt Revised Street Map Costs Are Noted Revised street maps for nine Oregon cities now avail able through the Oregon state highway department are 25 cents per map rhcet for large reproductions and 10 cents per map sheet for the small reproductions. The state highway depart ment noted that six sheets arc required for the complete map of Medford. The large reproductions the of Medford maps costs $1.50 and the small reproduction costs 60 cents. Other city maps available are Antelope, Dufur, Grass Valley, Shanlko, Wasco, Win ston and Yoncalla, all of which are on one sheet, and Sutherin, which requires two sheets. Balloting Device Demonstrated To Election Groups Salem - WPD - A small, in expensive device that could revolutionize balloting and vote counting procedures was demonstrated Tuesday to the House and Senate Election committees. Secretary of State Howell Appling Jr. termed the device a "distinct improvement over the present archaic system" of voting and ballot counting. The machine was demon strated by Dr. Joseph P. Har ris, professor of political science at the University of California. Legislation Pending He explained it had been shown to the legislatures in California and Wisconsin, and that legislation is now pend ing in California to authorize its use. The device, about 15 inches square and 1 Inch thick, weighs about five pounds. It serves as a rack to hold a printed ballot which is af fixed to the machine, and into which is inserted a data pro cessing machine punch card. Voters, instead of marking an "X" on a ballot, use a stylus to punch holes in the data card. Counted Fast The cards then are fed through a standard data pro cessing machine where the votes are counted and tabu lated in a few minutes. Harris, a recognized author lly in the elections field, said a voting machine should have these qualifications: "Be easy to use, foolproof, inexpensive, and secure from tampering. He said the machine he wa demonstrating had all of these features. Production of the devices is expected to start later this year. He said the cost would be $50 or less a machine. Appling said the punch cards used by the machine would be less expensive than the printed ballots now used. Rainwater, 200 Lewis avc., Grants Pass, was sentenced to one year in the Oregon state pcnitenliary on a charge of obtaining prop erty by false pretenses. He had pleaded guilty earlier to issuing a bad cherk at an Ash land service station. Allen Fredrick Harris, King's highway, Medford, re ceived a probation revocation and his sentence was deferred for 30 days. He was charged with violation of his proba tion.
