WEDNESDAY. APRIL 10, 1963 Mahaffey's Off Winging In National Loop Br DICK JOYCE UP1 Spelts Writtr All Art Mahaffey's got is a blazing fast ball and a nickel curve, according to baseball know-it-alls, but that big hummer was good enough to get the Philadelphia Phillies off winging in the National league pennant race. "Just let him throw that fait hall." sava Phillle Man acer Gene Mauch. "He docBn't need those other pitches." The Cincinnati Reds found that out for the second straight opening day when the big righthander pitched a four hitter and struck out 10 in a 2-1 victory Tuesday night. "It was Just fast balls," Mahaffey said after the game- Giants Did Everything Just Right Houston -dipt- Manager Al vin Dark, not given to over- enthusiasm, said Tuesday that the San Francisco Giants "did everything right" in thelx opening 0-2 win over Houston. What else could the Giant pilot say after San Francisco had mauled four Colt pitchers for 17 hits while Jack San- ford and Jack Fisher joined in a 5-hitter? "Man, that's got to be the hottest opening game ever," Sanford said after Tuesday's win. He said he sweated oft eight pounds in five innings. 12 In Row Sanford allowed only two singles over five innings, but surrendered three hits and two runs before giving way to Fisher in the sixth. Fisher retired 12 men straight. Dark said he was especially pleased with Fisher's showing. "I'm going to use Fisher every way I can," Dark said. "The more he pitches, the better he gets. I'm going to start hlin, Ditch him in the middle In nings and have him come in late- Dark also lauded Santord's performance and said he pull ed him only because he be lieved that was as long aa the big guy could go In tho heat. Seals Top Portland Unlltd Press International Seattle and Vancouver open their second round playoff ac tion in the Western Hockey 1 e a g u c's Northern division Wednesday night. It will be a best-of-seven series. San Frncisco Tuesday night overcame its hex at Portland to grab a convincing 3-2 deci sion and knot the Southern division scries at one game apiece. The winners of the North ern and Southern division playoff .Tries square off in another bestot-scven affair for the league lltlc. Mahaffey, a 10-game win ner for the Phillies last year, suffered from a painful right shoulder during spring train ing but his opening night per formance apparently has dis pelled any of Mauch's wor ries. Defeat Joey Jay The Phils, long-time door mat of the senior circuit but the best team in the league for the second half of last sea son, defeated 21-gamc winner Joey Jay for the second straight year on opening day. Don Demetcr's single drove in the first Phil lie run in the fourth inning and the clinch er came in when Gordy Cole man muffed a double play ball in the sixth. The Reds rallied in the ninth off Mahaffey when Frank Robinson singled and John Edwards doubled him home with one out. Mahaffey then settled down, striking out Gene Frecse and Tommy Harper. The National league cham pion San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers, rat ed with Cincinnati as the top contenders for the NL flag, won their opening day con tests. Four home runs - by Wil lie Mays, Orlando Cepcda, Willie McCovcy and Felipe Alou - led the Giants to a 0-2 victory over the Houston Colts and 23-gamc winner Don Drysdale of the Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs, 3-1. Broglio Pilches Two-Hitter In other games Ernie Brog lio pitched a two-hit, 7-0 vic tory for the St. Louis Cardi nals over the New Mets, and Celts' Rule Challenged Boston - mm - Nearly eight years of unchallenjfcd rule over professional basketball reaches crisis stage tonight when the Boston Celtics face Cincinnati's upstart Royals at Boston Garden. The National Basketball as- socuuton playoff game now Is a one-shot affair for both clubs. For Boston, victory would mean an unprecedented eighth straight Eastern di vision playoff title. For Cincinnati, an eight- point underdog in surprisingly light wagering, an upset would mean both an end of the Boston era and the ar rival of a basketball team that already has exceeded by far its own fondest dreams. The clubs stand at three victories apiece going into this seventh playoff meeting, despite the fact that Boston whipped Cincinnati nine times in a dozen regular sea son games. McBride Satisfied He Passed Big Test Los Angeles -it)Pi - Pitcher Ken McBride was satisfied to day he had passed his big test since last season's hard luck setback and hoped he wuuld be allowed to work every fourth day for the Los An geles Angels. The smooth-throwing right bunder demonstrated Ills Ill ness Tuesday night when he set the Boston Red Sox down on four hits while pitching the Angels to a 4-1 victory. Only Carl Ynsltvemskl's lead off homer in the seventh in ning kept McBride from achieving a shutout The win was McBride's Hrst since he suffered a cracked rib last July 21 although he made two late-season starts and lost them both, lie still had an 11-5 record for 1062. Death Penalty Bill Before Assembly Sacramento ilirii A bill lo grant a limited 4-yesr mora torium on the death penalty in California, as an experi ment in homicide rale, was before the assembly today with committee sanction. The measure, strongly back ed by Gov. Edmund ti. Brown, cleared the assembly Criminal Procedure conumt tee Tuesday night on a close ti-4 vole. But it faces an uphill fight from now on. Introduced by Assembly1 man Lester A McMillan iD Los Angelesi, the measure is given a more than 30 SO chance of passing the lower chamber. But the senate is another matter In the It) tunes California's legislature has considered the repeal of the death penally since 193J. the senate has never let a bill out of the cru cial judiciary committee The bill is expected to come up for assembly action early next week but it will be a month after that before it faces the Senate Judiciary committee. ft fed Savage's two-out pinch single paced the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-2 win over the Milwaukie Braves. Jack Sanford, a 24-gamc winner for the Giants last sea -on. pitched five-hit ball for five innings before giving way to Jack Fisher, who re tired all 12 Colts in order. The DO-degree heat and Santord's base-running - he hit a triple and a single, driving in three runs - caused the Giant right hander to tire. The Giants raked four Houston hurlers for 17 hits, with starter Dick Farrcll getting the loss. Maury Wills of the Dodg ers, the NL's most valuable player in 1062, suffered an injured ankle as he tried to score in the third and had to be replaced. Drysdale spaced 11 hits and was helped by three double plays. Rookie Ken McMullen drove home two runs for the Dodgers as Larry Jackson look the loss for Chicago Larry Burright of the Mets got the only hits oil Broglio -in the first and ninth innings. In between, the Card right hander set down 20 straight Mets. Bill White's homer and George Altman's four hits led the Cards 14-lilt attack - !2 of them coming off Roger Craig.
