MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFOHD. OREGON MONDAY. APRIL I. 1S63 German Shepherd Guards Museum In Los Angeles By JOHN POWER Los Angless - HOT - Mark, r highly cultured canine with a yen for art as ell as cats and would-be thieves, is eel ebrating the first anniversary of his job as a museum guard ing pooch. Mark, a three-year-old Ger man shepherd who rests dur ing off-duty hours in a 12 by 7 foot kennel ad-acen; to the Los Angeles County Museum. has taken the past year in cl ecung me praise The Turkey Awakens West in Venezuela To Investigate Junket Hardships of Congressmen By DICK WEST Caracas, Venezuela - (Qrl -Marcos Perez Jimenez, Vene z u e 1 a s unfrocked dictator, may not have been every one's idea of a model states man, but I will say one thine for him, He knew how to think big. Sh o r 1 1 y be fore his con- Wttt stituents de cided it was time for a change, Perez Jimenez erected near this city two of the world's most spectacular hotels, give , or take the wagon yard at Merkel, Texas, my old home town. One hotel - the Hum-1 boldt-he put on a mountain-1 top and the other-the Macuto -he built by the sea. They were architectural j iriumpns ana nan every uuujj that a luxury resort needs with one minor exception. The missing element was pay ing customers. In order to reach the Hum boldt, a guest had to ride a cable car up the mountain side, scale a precipice that would intimidate Sir Edmund Hillary, or bring his own hel icopter. These were conditions that the average tourist was unwilling to meet, and the Humboldt, after catering, for a lima to amply rooms, had to close. This was mora than could be said for the Macuto which was complet ed in 1 958 at a cost estimat ed from S30 million to S45 million and then didn't open at all. Last year, in an effort to bring the turkey to life, the Venezuelans marie a deal with a U. S. hotel chain, the Shera ton Corp.. to lake over the management of the Macuto. and this week, it is having its formal opening, or reincarna tion, as the Macuto-Sheraton. To commemorate the event, , the Sheratons have imported i several planeloads of Yankee celebrities and run-of-the-mill freeloaders, which explains the presence here of y'r i h'mbr c'rr'sp'nd'nt. 1 came down from Wash j ington. D.C.. to investigate conditions that members of the U. S. Congress must en dure when they go on over seas junkets. Venezuela is a popular slopping place for congressional travelers and presumably some will be stay ing at this hotel in the future. In a sense, a hotel open ing is likt tha thaktdown cruise ol a new ship. Thost of us now instilled in tha Macuto Sharatan provide tha management with a chanca to break in tha staff and work out any bugs in tha lervlca bafora the pay ing guesti arrive. To that extent we are pio neers and we feel a kinship with Christopher Columbus who sailed up Venezuela's Or inoco river on his third voy age to the Americas. We are clearing a path, so to speak. Pioneering, of course, brings certain privations. Just this morning 1 heard Rod Serling of televisions's "Twi light Zone" say that the lob ster thermidor he ordered Thursday night was cold when it reached his table. But Serling displayed the stiff upper lip that is typical of our group. Standing on the banks of one of the hotel's four swimming pools he wav ed toward the mountain and thespa and said "it takes such a little bit to make a man happy." To that I can only add "bravo." Sherwood Man Killed By Accidental Gunshot Hillsboro - aire - Eugene Reed. 30, Sherwood, was ac cidentally shot and killed Sat urday, sheriff's officers re ported. Pellant. the museum's chief security office-, when icscrib jng the progress made by the first four-footed security of-1 ficer to pound a beat in an American museum. "We now consider him a ; full-fledged member of the force and the guards feel saf er with Mark than another security office," said Pellant. At present, the sleek black and tan dog is trained to work j with four male handlers but shortly will work with Mrs. Dixie Allen, the museum's only female security officer. Dixie also is another first, according to museum offi- cials. "Other museums have fe- male guides but wc are the nnlv museum staff to have a . female security officer," said j I Pellant. Why a female guard? The museum attracts about 1.5 million visitors a year and. according lo Pellant, about BO per cent of them are women and children. "We want Dixie, who i works during visitors' hours, to be able to work with Mark should any emergency arise," ' said Pellant. Mark now works at night when the museum is closed. He makes the rounds with 1 a fellow security officer on i a learh. Given Credit Pellant credits Mark with j two major accomplishments during his first year at the museum. Although not on public view during daylight hours, the fact that a trained guard dog is in the vicinity has cut down on the petty larceny that exists in any public building. And he has made the museum an unh thy p'ace for visiting cats which plagued the area before his arrival. The plan to use a dog as part of the museum's secur ity staff was the result of an increasing number of art thefts in this country and Eu rope during the past few j years. Officials felt that the mu cum, which has 203,600 square feet of space for ex-1 hlhlttan halls, galleries and public areas as well as 83,-j I 000 square teci Demnu his ) Kisnea. could provide a place for a potential thief to hide I until the museum closed ana then steal or damage.
