Overhead, a foot of oozy mud and a couple of feet of water; an ideal en vironment for this heavy ahelled mollusk - the giant urf clam. Differing aomewhat from most clam species, the surf clam prefers a borderline po sition, seeming to delight in the waves right at the point where heavy surf is breaking. This pounding by wave action would seem to be the crea ture's only form of relaxation or enjoyment, unless he de rives some small measure of comfort in ooze or loose sand while resting s the tide surges in above him. Built for This Lli This clam Is built for rough and tumble wave action; the shell itself Is heavy, thick and strong. It is a shell without color, with the outer surface marked with growth lines. The surf-clam is probahly the largest bivalve shell In Amer ican waters, often measuring seven inches in length and weighing as much as a pound and a half. Because of its commonness, this clam Is usually the very first shell the amateur collec tor finds while walking along an ocean beach. Too, it will be the largest shell he will find, and about the least col orful. However, If the collector knows where iu look, and digs up one of these clams j tually jump trWO the sand, from its home in the sand, he I but it is doomed; the whelk will find the shell is yellowish j drains out the body juices, in color due to a yellow epl- Later, some child may pick dermis that may completely j up one valve of the clam shell cover the outside of the two j from a stretch of beach and valves. "Look, away after the animal dies, there's a small round hole In and those shells that wash up this shell sand just at the surt line, with the waves pounding against it, this clam is never too far away from its ever present en emies that can attack and de stroy it. The starfish is an enemy, as is a species of whelk. The starfish clasps Ihe clam with its many arms, Its mouth directly over the dividing line where the two valves of the clam are tightly clamped together. The arms of the star fish exert a steady pull, at tempting to sejiarate the two valves. The clam is deter mined and strong; it wil keep its two shells tightly closed. But eventually the abductor muscle begins to tire. This is the time the starfish is wail ing for. As the two valves se arate slightly, the starfish quickly protrudes its own stomach inside the other mol lusk's soft body. Within a cou ple of hours the body juices of the clam have been sucked into the stomach of the star fish. Different Attack The whelk shell has a dif-fc-renl method of attack. With lis raspy tongue it bores a hole In Ihe thick shell. The boring procedure may con tinue for sonic time, but eventually a hole is drilled, even when the clam shell may be nearly an inch in thickness. In the meantime the clam goes its leisurely way, until it feels the prick of the tongue when it breaks into the body cavity. The Jacksonville library will be reduced from 30 to 20 hours per week under the pared program. Requests of school students at the branch libraries will not be forwarded to head quarters. Special classroom collec tions of books to schools will be eliminated. May Be Limitad Student use of the head quarters library will be limit ed in some way. The board, at conclusion of the meeting, asked that all persons interested in a vital library program for Jackson county make their wishes known to the Jackson counvy budget committee. Considering the action of the Jackson county court in refusing any Increases In the library budget for 1983-64, the trustees stated; "ft is our feeling that the counly court has . not thor oughly understood the serious problem created by the in creased Use of the library in Jackson county. The use of the branch libraries has in creased at the rate of D.8 per cent, the branch requests for information 40 per cent, the shipment of school classroom collections of books by 310 per cent and school class vis its by 85 per cent." The population of Jackson county also is growing at the rate of about 4 per cent per year, the trustees pointed out. The increase in the number of persons using the library will be 1,200 in the current year. Has Right to Dacida "It is well understood that the county court has the right to decide the amount of mon ey given to the library. At the same time, the Public Library trustees must fit the service the library renders the county to the amount of money avail able. If the county court docs not give the library more funds to work with than were given last year, in the "face of rising demand which will no doubt continue, then some adjustments in Ihe service rendered must he made," the official statement of the trus tees read. After listing the restric tions, which would be neces sitated by the curtailment, the trustees explained that since students are served by their own school libraries this area seemed the most logical one In which to reduce the serv ice. Funds to continue this service were included in the budget, however, and lo re strict student use of the li brary would be a "serious and unpleasant decision to make."
