4 I Prospect Residents Favor Formation Of Fire District By VELDA BARR Mail Tribune Correspondent Prospect - Around 35 per sons turned out here last Fri day to discuss possible forma tion of a Prospect Rural Fire protection district. No definite steps toward formation were announced at the meeting, but the general feeling of the group was that something needed to be done to supply the area with prop er fire protection. Present to answer questions were Chief Gordon Barker of the Mcdford Fire depart ment, Chief L. C. Liscnbee of the Central Point Rural Fire Protection district and Wil liam Roblc of the state fire marshal's office. Many present expressed the feeling that in the past the community of Prospect has succeeded In accomplishing projects its resident have set out to do, and that formation of a fire district should be no exception. E. NEALON Mail Tribune Table Rock Correspondent According to reports, local pear orchards suffered very little, if any, damage from the frost. However, ex tensive firing of heaters was done on several nights. For some reason the black greasy soot that generally settles on lawns, houses, drapes and furniture inside of dwel lings was much lighter than usual. We suppose it could have been weather conditions, or the new heaters some are using. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Robinson were recent visitors with their son, Doug and family of Napa, Calif. Straus Bros., Sams Valley farmers, are preparing land on the Ed Taylor farm for the seeding of grain and corn. Agete School Ball Found We are glad to report that the old Agate school bell has been located. Wc received a telephone call Friday from Mr. Fred O. Lindcrcn of Brookings. Oregon. He said he had read in the Tablets where the old Agate school bell was missing. The bell, he says, is mounted on a cement block in Mrs. Grace Orr's yard on Orr drive, a mile more or less from where it used hang in the old Agate school house. Mrs. Orr, formerly Grace Gib bons, was a student in the Agate school. Mr. Linderen is well acquainted in the valley having lived in Mcd ford back in the good government days. We thank him kindly for his keen interest and long distance tele phone call. We note that our legislators have passed a bill pul ling a sales tax on cigarettes which probably will be referred to the voters for the final verdict. It will take a lot of smoking to get enough money to anywhere near pay the damages caused by cigarettes to forests, grain fields, public buildings, homes, furniture, cars and hundreds of others besides the harm to the smokers and the cost of maintaining fire districts. Wc used to write grange insurance, and during World War II we adjusted fire losses and were satisfied in our own mind that where the cause of the fire was unknown many were cigarette fires. A letter from Paul Luy, of Palm Springs, Calif, tells that he found our story about Bill Bybee most interesting, bringing back memories of bygone days, but he had never heard our story about Bill Bybee. Glad you liked it Paul, and perhaps sometimes we can get to gether and talk over old times. Paul's mother was a member of the Bybee family. , Harry Truman's Humor Some lime ago wc were talking with a neighbor about Harry Truman's sense of humor, when he said he was going to be around here for some time yel, re gardless of what some people he knew desired. The neighbor replied that Truman's sense of humor might backfire on him one of these days, which was what mine did on one occasion, causing me quite a little em barrassment. The rest of the story will have to come later as this is getting too long and part of last week's Tablets was commercialized out. If the weather continues as it is for a few days, the planting of onions and potatoes will get under way. Wc hear tell our legislators did themselves proud, put a tax on cigarettes and took it off whiskey license, which means less smoke, more whiskey. According to Mrs. George Loftin, her husband, our Texas democratic friend, is getting along fine. He goes out on the hillside with the tractor hunting rattlesnakes, which he says he detests, and is trying to clean out a den north of his place.
