'Whiteout' Claims Three in Alaska Bethel, Alaska- IUPD- Three persons were killed in the crash of the.r light plane near here Saturday after the pilot lost his bearings in a "white, out," a condition in which the sky and snowy ground blend together. The plane, piloted by Gary Hodges of Bethel, had flown a Public Health Sorvice sani tation expert, Jack E. Davis to the village of Scammon Bay, IdO miles northwest of here. En route back to Bethel they had stopped at the vil lage of Chevak to pick up an ether health service em ployee, Teresa L. Chimeral rea, and were just 20 minu'es out of Bethel when Hodges reported encountering i h e whiteout. Bodies of the three victims were brought to the Alaska native service hospital here Sunday. APRIL 1. 19S3 A 7 Welfare Stresses Rehabilitation Salem - (UPli - Rehabilitation was stressed as the State Pub lic Welfare Commission took a look Friday at the State General Assistance program and the federal program for Aid to Dependent Children of the Unemployed. The commission approved a five-point resolution encour aging rehabilitation. It stress es work relief programs at the city and county levels, intensified ease-work to re turn the employables to the job rolls, and vocational re habilitation. The commission heard a protest over the federally or dered "fraud hunt" in the ADC program. The federal government has required a survey to look for cheaters. Assistant administrator Gcr aldine Derby said the current two-month survey is taking the time of 30 staff members and costing $77,000. Two Boys Stranded On Cliff at Delake Delake - IUPU - Two 18-year-old Taft High school boys were stranded for two hours on a cliff overlooking the ocean four miles north of here Sunday. Robert Calkins of Ocean lake and Tom Miller of De lake were stranded when the tide came in but were talked down by the Devil's Lake Fire department after the tide receded slightly.
