I used to say to my students, "Never tell a person with cancer that he is doomed, or that he will last only three month, because he may keep coming around to 'embarrass' you for the next 10 or 20 yoirs! " Many years ago I learned much when I read the annual report of the Middlesex Hos pital in England, dated around 1895. In those days they didn't perform the oper ations which today our sur geons practically always per as per- form on the woman who has cancer of the breast. In 1805, they just gave the woman nursing care. What impres sed me tremendously was that, as I remember. 10 per cent of thc women, without any effort at treatment of the cancer, lived on for five years., snd some 5 per cent just didn't die of the cancer. They lived for years until a heart attack or a pneumonia carried them off. Cancer Revealed Many times in my liff I have seen people with cancer who lived in good health for inanjr yvaiz. rui U 19 there was the school teacher who had her breast remover for cancer. Fourteen years later she happened to bump her hip going through a door, and when it kept hurting, she came to me. When.J X-rayed the hip, I was surprised to see the boneful!' of -career which had probablv been there for the 14 years. Mrs. Linstead tells in her book about her two trips to see a once notorious cancer quack who has now been put out of business by thc health authorities of the United States. As so often happens, al though this man probably took her money in advance and then certainly did not help her, she has no harsh word to say about him. This strong tendency of people to love a quack even after he has gypped them is what keeps the man in business. Worth's Queck's Fee As Mrs. Linstead says, the person with an inoperable cancer feels that it was. worth thc quack's fee to gel some hope for a few months and hence better sleep at night. I agree with her that hope will sometime? seem to con trol cancer growth. I remem ber well the banker I knew who had a big inoperab',? can ccr of his stomach.
