Owen Phlpps of the Corval lis city park and recreation de partment said the 1,000 stu dents expect to accomplish a task In an afternoon that would "take our city crews a year to complete." Eight separate work parties are being organized to carry out assignments planned at a Joint meeting of student and city leaders. Randolph Collier, representing timber oriented Siskiyou and Del Norte counties, today called on the United States forest service, California division of forestry, and other public and private agencies to begin de veloping a plan of defense against a potentially explosive summer fire situation. Collier last week was au thor of a Senate Resolu tion which noted that the mountain snow pack this year is far below average and of fers little hope of snow re maining on the ground until the normal mid summer peri od. Collier said he fears that without the snow pack the woods will experience an ex tremely hot, dry season. "Timber products and rec reation are the core of our economies," Collier stated. The ugly scare of the 1955 fire season will be with us for decades. We dare not risk another season of that na ture." Collier added that he hopes the agencies, through' early planning and cooperation, will be able to develop programs which will protect the natural resource and still permit max imum entry into and use of the timber areas by industry and recreation. His resolution offered no specific directions to the agan- cies involved, but Collier said he hopes that through increas ed surveillance, shifts of man power and equipment, educa tional programs, and other means, that the dangers can be lessened.
