(UPI) Sticky Tape High In World Usage Chicago - IUPI) - Poets say love makes the world go 'round. . ' But an industrialist says sticky tape holds the world to gether. Robert J. Leander, a man who makes his living in ad hesives, says the burgeoning tape business has long since grown out of the confines of the home. . "A large part of the tape business today really is out of this world," he said in an in terview. He cited use of exotic tapes on the satellite launch ing pads at Cape Ganaveral as one example. Withstanding short - term heat of up to five-thousand de grees, the tape rides along with missiles and jet aircraft. Down to earth, the sticky tapes have found a myriad of applications up to and includ ing patching and holding to gether a cracked auto wind shield. Leander, president of Mys tik Adhesive Products Inc., de scribed how development of tapes for the military leads to better tapes for use on the homefront. During World War II, for example, the tape engineer came up with a cloth-backed waterproof tape to protect military hardware against the elements. The tapes, postwar, were put to multiple use in homes. More recently, tape scien tists have successfully utilized such test-tube products as my lar, telflon and plastics to pro duce space age tapes capable of withstanding both high and low temperature ex tremes. In time, he predicted, these, too, will find a purpose on the homefront. Bartow, Fla. - UIPU - Dog naping has become so wide spread in Polk county that Sheriff Monroe Brannen Tues day assigned a special deputy to investigate 18 dog thefts so far this month. The study, entitled "Risk Management In a Catastro phe," was prepared by the University of Oregon bureau of business research. It is the second of two studies published by the bu reau and financed by the Small Business administra tion in a nationwide series of management research re ports. The first study was an analysis of the adequacy of insurance programs carried by small retailers in Oregon. lit. ureena Makes Study ine Koseburg study was made by Dr. Mark R. Greene, professor of insurance and head of the department of marketing and industrial management In the univer sity's school of business ad ministration. Project director was Dr. Wesley C. Ballaine, director of the bureau of business research. Copies of the report are available for reference at any Small Business administration office, or may be purchased for $1 from the bureau of business research, University oi uregon, JCugene. The study shows that about 9 per cent of the fair market value of the property in Rose burg was destroyed bv the blast which occurred when a parked truck carrying 13,000 pounds of explosives was heated by a nearby fire and exploded. Seven city blocks were leveled and 28 others were severely damaged. Well Protected Most business firms were well protected by insurance and the recoveries from their policies undoubtedly were mainly responsible for the smootn economic recovery demonstrated in the area, the study concludes. The study adds, however. that in specific instances un insured losses caused consid erable hardship. Economic indicators of business activity in Roseburg, such as employment, bank debits, buying income, and bank deposits, showed no significant change which could be traced to the blast. Over half of all loss claims paid were $1,000 or less, and more than 80 per cent were less than $5,000. About 10 per cent of the total number of claims represented unin sured claims or claims in sured for inadequate limits. Although most of those in sured appeared satisfied with loss adjustment procedures, there were some disagree ments over proper deductions for depreciation, property ap praisals, and repair estimates. Settled Within Month Nearly half of the claims were settled within one month, and about 90 per cent were settled within 120 day?. ihe study reports that most of those insured were satis fied with the role played by their agents, but that it seems evident that agents play more of a minor role in cases of loss settlement than is commonly supposed as most of the bur den is carried out by adjust ing personnel. After the blast actions were taken by a significant propor tion of those insured to cor rect errors in insurance and risk management procedures. Many increased their limits of coverage, or bought coverage previously rejected, and some rebuilt with better types of construction. Airs. The vote to table the mat ter was 5 to 4 in the House committee on commerce and utilities.
