SECTION D PAGES 1 to 6 MedfordITribune MEDFORD. OREGON, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 1963 Open Toes Are Out in Shoes for Younger Set-New Leathers Vary The footprint! in tha sands of fashion are changing-teen-agers are walking around in light, airy leather flats in school and out. It's all due to a new look of quiet good taste that pervades the campus these days, says Shoe Fashion Service of Leather Industries of America. Fads still mean fun afoot, but they're not the be all and end-all of fashion. Today's teen-ager is seen in subtle - colors and simple styles. On the ground, the style note is sounded by un derstated colored leathers -smooth, brushed, grained and patent leathers- in pumps and flats with pared down sides. Jelly Bean Colors Youthful dress shoes, the kind that will sparkle in the Easter parade, show up in jelly bean colors. In every leather and in most colors, it's bright, but not too sunny. For dress occasions, the flat and the low heel share honors, but for parties and dances it's the mid heel that's popular. Among the fads are off-side straps, in pumps and flats. Other fads are large perfora tions, the use of under and overlays to provide color, and leather texture contrasts. In both dress pumps and casual flats, portholes on vamp and side are part of the teen's "open look" afoot. Open toes are out-banished to squaresville. Flats with wideopen spaces at the side or back are always teamed with closed toes-round, tapered or square. In casual footwear - the kind a girl likes to wear when she's not dating or shopping brushed leather flats are tops. Brushed split leather gains popularity, because the leath er has been "split" or thinned down to make the shoe light er, more pliable. COLORING COATS Color never had it so good as it does in spring coats. Women have their choice of pretty pastels, clear mid brights and flattering dark tones. The white and off-white coat is a fashion favorite for spring. ' The brushed leather pixie boot is another example of an off-campus shoe. For good looks and easy wear, the glove leather moccasin or flat feels soft and lithe on the foot, like a glove on the hand. While she's looking for new fashions, the teen also takes time out to buy a rc-stylcd classic - the leather moccasin, seen this year in new waxy leather as well as smooth, grained and patent. Springfield Widow Named State Mother Corvallis-flJPD-Mrs. Lillian L. England, 71 year - old Springfield widow, has been named Oregon's Mother of 1963, it was announced Tuts day by Mrs. Clarence Mo Cracken, chairman of the se lection committee. ,"' Mrs. England will go to New York in May to compete in the American Mother ciin. test. K ENGLISH MOHAIR-Mohair is well-suited for spring, as in dicated by tfiis two-piece suit in fuzzy, soft-looped English mohair ..tweed. Button-front collarless jacket sports a tn colorcd silk scarf, and the skirt, with softly-folded front, I js belted in tri-colored leather. By David Kidd for Arthur Jablow. -. Leather Tops Fashion Crest for Every Hour Leather rides the crest of fashion this spring. Light as an April breeze, but warm enough for blustery spring days, leather apparel is made to travel right up to the hot months. The softer, more feminine look is interpreted in graceful leather coats, in daytime and after-dark dresses, in hats and suits. Soft pastels and taupes are favored colors. Both smooth, matte leather and buttersoft suede share the fashion spotlight, reports the Leather Industries of Amer ica. Leather shows up in sleeve less, plunging back suede sheaths for evening and in el b o w-patched, leather fronted knitted cardigans for casual wear. . For the bright look of spring, delicate-colored leath ers team with silks, with cot tons and with sheerest wools. A raw silk sheath takes on added dimension with a silk bound matching suede jacket. The costume look is carried out in a Chanel-type cabretta jacket and matching, gently flared skirt. Fall's darling, the leather FOCUS ON SLEEVES Sleeves ase a focal point of fashion news this season. Two favorites are the long, lean sleeve and the blousey, shirt cuffed sleeve. , shift, shifts into spring but in more Boay-clinging lines, in light tones such as rose beige and pale blue. Handsome for town wear is the short coat in suede or supple smooth leather, in minty green or lic orice black. Simply styled, the season's coats accentuate leather tex ture. For after-dark wear, ele gant wrap coats of smooth cabretta are embroidered or studded with fake jewels. Lightly flared smooth leath er skirts double for day and evening wear. Daytime sees them in middy or overblouse style in doe soft leather, night time with a beaded chiffon top. For more after-dark slam. our, the reed-slim A-line gown appears in taupe smooth leath. er or sand-beige suede leather. The leather hat is spring- important in pillboxes and domes, in turbans and sailors. It shows up in smooth and grained leathers, in artfully draped and wrapped turbans in shiny kidskin or soft suede. It flashes in black patent leather, in straw combina tions,' in pale lilac tones and navy blues. Black patent now becomes more than a classic shoe ma terial; it is fashionable in ap parel as wfell as hats. As a coat, it takes to abbreviated trench styles. For the beach, it's lined in white terry cloth.
