Knits for Sportswear Favored In Suits, Separates, Casuals
There've been times-in the
past, of course-when a mere
man, looking at a new fash
ion for women, might say,
either jestingly or seriously,
"What is it?" - .
This spring is the time when
women, referring to a most
important kind of fashion,
might echo that same question-in
a happy tone, more
approving than curious.
What is it? It's sportswear,
an idea that has evolved from
its original definition as one
kind of fashion-clothing for
active or spectator sports-in-lo
many kinds of fashion, all
of them adding up to the sym
bol and substance of the well
dressed American look.
Sportswear still means fash
ions for sports, as the grow
ing popularity of new styles
for boating and bowling at
test. But it means much more.
Sportswear means knits, an
ever-expanding fashion that
includes separates, casual
dresses and suits in every
kind of texture and material
imaginable-wool knits, cotton
knits, knits of man-made
miracle fibers and blends.
Newest and most exciting
meaning of sportswear centers
on fashions for patio, loung
ing, at-home entertaining. The
long look comes to the fore.
as tops of all sorts pair up
with the long, long skirt. Col
ors, fabrics, prints mix r.nd

plaid wool top with a
long, floating solid-color chif
fon skirt, to cite just one ex
ample. Copy Muu-muu
Shorter dresses copy the
muu-muu and an array of
easy, natural shapes.
Pants are in the picture,
at-home and elsewhere. Slim
trim and tapered is classic
now. For spring and especial
ly for patio dazzle, there's
news in the widening influ
ence of dashing bell-bottoms
and in modified harem styles.
Sportswear means coordi
nates, for all hours and occa
sions. Mixtures of colors and
fabrics continue to be the
fashion trend. Skirts show
new variations of casc-casy-slim,
pleated, "ya-ya" influ
enced with hemline flares and
flounces.
Tops lake the brief approach
to the casual life, to sunshine
and fun. Midriffs are bared by
fitted, flared and free-swinging
versions of these little
toppings.

Nautical Look Major Trend in Sportswear
With an estimated 2D or
more million boating enthusi-asts-of
whom eight and one
half million are registered
boat owners - expected to
crowd the nation's coastlines
and waterways this season, it
is not surprising that the nau
tical iook has become a major
trend in summer sporstwear.
Even landlubbers will be seen

ing as sleeveless shells, middy
looks and other relaxed pull
overs, pretty looks highlight
ing ruffles and lace. The cas
ual tuckin with roll-up sleeves
maintains a strong position.
Sportswear means sweaters,
and so does spring, especially
since cardigans are such popu
lar pairings with sleeveless
dresses not only now but well
into summer, as travel com
panions and air conditioning
protectors.
And sportswear means in
teresting fabrics, rugged but
rcfined-a country look come
to town. Leading off are work
denims and denim copies, lin
ens and linen looks, madras.

Furniture Appears
In International
Design for Spring
More variety to choose from
and more value for the money
appear to be the twin themes
of the spring '63 selection of
furniture and furnishings.
Designs show a distinct in

Influences inspire styles ex
ecuted in modern materials
and contemporary colors.

Rattan Finds Use
In Many Types of
Modern Furniture
Rattan furniture is making
itself at home in every room
of the house this spring, offer
ing the triple advantages of
comfort, attractive design and
budget-price.
The comfort is mainly due
lo the addition of buoyant
foam rubber cushioning lo
both imporls and contempo
rary styles turned out here at
home. High fashion touch is
carried out by the rich mate
rials used for upholstery -textured
silks in vivd shades,
gay Gauguin prints and
blended fabrics combining
cotton with synthetic yarns in
interesting new weaves.
For New Home
Designers are using rattan
for good basic pieces that can
serve as the attractive nucleus
of a ncwlywed couple's first
home, then be relegated to the
family room or patio when the
household expands.
They are also turning out
"fun" pieces - lighlhcarled
Polynesian designs, romantic
butlerfy-backed loungs chairs,
"gazebo" beds with woven
rattan forming a canopy with
a peak like the old summer
house. Rockers, loo
One of the nation's top con
temporary designers turns out
sleek occasional rockers and
chairs composed of a woven
rattan basket sling placed in
an exposed walnut frame. One
of his most outstanding items
is a gently curved pair of rat
tan sofas that can be used sep
arately or together to define a
conversation area.
These are upholstered in
foam rubber cushioning and,
depending upon the choice of
fabric, can fit into the most
sophisticated of decors.
Rattan used in combination
with cane provides another
new look of furniture for

ready lo enhance outdoor liv
ing, then move indoors later
for many uses.
ian classic and provincial; and
softened, enriched contempo
rary and transitional.
Personal Interests
Spanish, Greek and Medi
terranean themes in general
provide new decorative treat
ments, new ideas in room ac
cessories. Perhaps the newest trend in
the treatment of home space
is away from the catch-all
family room toward personal
interest rooms - dens, music
rooms, libraries, for instance.
Both decorators and furniture
manufacturers have come up
with inspirations to make this
trend possible.
Since space is at a premium
in most homes, more "single
purpose" rooms mean that
something has to give, else
where, and fresh ideas are of
fered for more double-duty
rooms. Some suggested com
binations, for which the fur
nishings are spring-available,
arc living-dining, bed-sitting,
work-play.
Trend Is Soft
Walnut and fruitwoods are
widely used in spring's furni
ture offerings, as are mahog
any and maple. Newest tone
for wood finishes is medium
brown, either a little darker
or a little lighter than usual.
Expensive - looking hardware,
with a hand-crafted air, car
ries out the value theme.
Brilliant colorings share in
terest with the softer tones in
upholstery for chairs and so
fas. Contrasts, effective and
decorative, are created by the
use of splashy florals side by
side with muled stripes and
solids.
Scaling emphasizes cush
iony comfort and graceful con
tours. Soft fceling-literally-is
extended to a softer look in
design, with curving lines,
airy-effect carving on the ex
posed woods, tufting and
quilling of fabrics.
Carpets offer variety to suit
every home - colors, designs
and textures keyed to every
thing from modern lo Medi
terranean. Surface interest
and color excitement go to the
floor, in carved raised-and-lowcrcd
looks, and in a vari
ety of rich hues.
Tunic Dress Revived
In Maternity Clothes
Revived interest in the
tunic dress or suit . . . it's the
big fashion look in maternity
styles this spring. The higher
waist is also coming in, and
it's especially smart when it
is used in a tunic.
The ovcrblouse is seen In
creasingly this season, and
with good reason. It lends it
self beautifully to full skirts,
is often part of a two-piece
dress and Is the perfect com
plement lo a suit.
