WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20. 1363 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON Hats Run Gamut of Shapes and Sizes All the gaiety and glamor it springtime, the fresh look ind the refreshing young spir it of the season is expressed in the new hat fashions for spring, 1963. The chaste flood taste of so many of the new clothes makes this spring a holiday for hat - lovers. Delightfully expressing the inherent charm of the truly feminine, the range of styles goes from crisp straw sailors and swag gers to misty flowers pressed in malines and clouda of filmy chiffon. Maculine dash and daring appeals to the feminine heart and makes a deep impression on spring fashions with the release of the spectacular film about "Lawrence of Arabia." The mystery of the ever changing desert and the flow ing grace of the Bedouin garb brings a "Chic Sheik" look to the feminine costume for spring. Araby Trend Many of the trend-setting creators lake their inspiration from Araby, bringing onto the fashion scene a dazzling array of richly draped tur bans, flamboyant fezzes and chiffon - swathed "pith hel mets." Completing the saucy charm of the new spring suits. ON DISPLAY! See 3 of our famous Kencraft travel trailers on display this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Medford Shopping Center parking lot. Pacific Hwy. which achieve high fashion status by combining tradition al haberdasher detail with contemporary freedom of sil houette and look more like sweater;, like dresses or like costumes than like any of their rigidly disciplined fore bears, there are many charm ing new suit hats with an ap pealing blend of his-and-hers detail. Straw Derby Derby and fedora crowns, snap and swagger brims reach new heights of feminine flat tery in fine straws and fragile colors tailored to a tomboy's taste. What could be younger in heart or hat? Mats that whisper, rather than shout, speak eloquent ly of the ageless appeal of flowers and fancies. There is a young, unstudied look to these most feminine spring styles. Blossoms are dream like in form or color, rather than realistic as a modern plastic bouquet. Sometimes flower forms are mistily printed on sheerest silk. Sometimes their fragile col ors and shapes are suggested by meringues of mesh and rib bony straw. But whether worn above a willowly crepe or a softly-shaped coat, they always assure the look and feel of spring, 1063 at its love liest. Gay Guises Favorite spring hat shapes appear in gay new guises. For one who's always won by a sailor, there arc sleek, Span ish sailurs with silver brims and perky smaller sailors of textured straws with a fresh "open air" look. Others arc soft and slouchy, like the hat of a South American gaucho or a Confederate soldier. Still more shapes freely borrowed from the boys include high, rounded derbies, pleated fe doras and the tilted fez, as well as the exotic Peruvian swagger. Bonnets and cloches win hearts with sweetly curving brims and airy crowns. Caps, coifs, kepis and sun helmeis provide starting points for many of the springs' enchant ing young hybrids. But above all is the wealth of turbans and turban-like draperies and artful twistings and turnings of airy spring hat-makings that create the utmost flattery in hats for every type and oc casion. Never has that old say ing been trucr-a lady is known by her hat! Colors Vary The Arabian influence Is al so evident in the colors of spring hats. The purest white of the snow-capped mountain passes and the desert dazzle of sunlit sand are reflected in straws, chiffons and feather weight felts. Blues range from pale tur quoise of distant Sahara hori zons to the mysteriously pur pled shadows of black rocky wastelands. Sand dune and camel browns, desert yellows from banana to burnished gold and copper, desert pinks of quartz to flamboyant cerise, sunset peach to oasis orange hues, touches of vibrant Arabian red and flame, to deep palm greens and polished Bedouin black complete the romantic palette. .! iw. Other fabrics include wool jersey, cotton velveteen, waffle-weave pique, moir, poplin. Short-jacketed suits, a pret ty minority this spring, take on seasonal frshnss with fluid lines and new pale hues. Many New Styles Being Offered In Men's Hafs When it is said that men's hats are "shaping up" for spring, it is more than a mere figure of speech. There will be more smart shapes in both blocks and brims than have ever been offered before. The new crowns are offer ed in several variations. The most popular is the crown with the plain center crease, in both full and tapered shapes. There is also a strong trend to the pinched front crowns, the newest of which have rather elongated side dents ex tending from the front to a point close to the rear of the bow. The new silhouette blocks with the convex tops are go ing great guns in sport hats, particularly in those made of fabric. Brim widths range from the very narrow one and one fourth inch for young men, through the most popular one and five-eighths inch, up to a rather wide two inch width. Obviously, the weights for spring are lighter and the average fell hat body is far more supple as a result. How ever, there are some even lighter and more supple than the rest. These are the roll able, foldablc, packable travel hats. Similar types are growing in popularity in straw hats, toe. Some of those soft bodied straws can even be shaped to the wearer's taste. . There is also a trend to ward natural color straw in both the soft and convention al bodies.
