And, ac cording to Paul Harvey, prep sports writer for the Eugene Register Guard, "tnere g gen. eral agreement on two counts." Said Harvey, "Two Eugene schools and Medford are the clubs to watch, and with North Eugene and South Eu gene in the big classic, tour nament attendance records should fall. "The sports writers tabbed North Eugene (21-1) the top club in the state in the final Associated Press poll, then picked South Eugene (18-4) as the club most likely to win the tourney. "The writers predicted an all-Eugene finale , , . But they also warned thai Medford could walk off with every thing." First Test The Associated Press pre dictions get their initial tests this evening. Medford High and North Eugene appear in the Class A-1 tournament's first engagements. The Black Tornado of Medford, contend ing in a Tuesday opener of the tournament for the first time, takes on Lebanon's War riors at 7:30 p.m. North Eu gene follows at 8:45 p.m. against Marshall of Portland. These two encounters touch off a 28-game tourney pro gram which continues through Saturday night when the 10(33 champion will be crowned. Six first round games are on the Wednesday docket. On Thursday four consolation bracket contests SPORTSCAST Radio station KYJC will carry in Madford Labanon gam at 7:30 o'clock and tht Marshall-Norlh Eugana clash at 8:45 p.m. In tha Oragon Class A-1 high school baiktl ball tournament at Eugan. Grants Pass High, co-chain pion with Medford in the Southern Oregon conference, was the 1962 A-1 titlist. It begins its derense at 2 p.m. on Wednesday against South Sa lem. Medford and GP will aim to uphold recent year's Dis trict 6 domination of the tour ney. The Tornado was champ in I860 and Klamath Falls nipped Medford in the 1961 title game. Wednesday first. round games include Pendleton ver sus Molalla at 9 a.m., Tilla mook versus Astoria at 10:15 a.m., Hcrmiston versus Sandy at 3:15 p.m., South Eugene versus Milwaukie at 7:30 p.m. and Franklin versus Tigard at 8:45 p.m. winner of the Lebanon- Mcdford game will play the winner of the North Eugene- Marshall contest on Thursday at 3 p.m. Losers meet at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Grants Pass South Salem victor goes against the Hermislon-Sam'y winner at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Losers of those two games meet at' 11 a.m. on Thursday. Scouting Reports Lebanon is in the tourna ment for the first time since 1951. The Warriors have been described as similar to Med ford in Personnel. They won second place in their Valley circuit with an 11-4 record while Medford knotted wllh GP in the Southern at 11-5. The Tornado and Lebanon each were 18-6. Harvey in the Register- Guard published "scouting re ports of all 16 tourney teams. This is his report con cerning Lebanon: 'Good speed but might slow down in tournament. Good overall rebounding . . . Only good outside shooter is Tim Blanchal, best all-around player. Height good but bench weak. Ability to win close ones with all three triumphs over Corvallis by single point. Generally man -for -man de fense but can go zone at times." Henley, unbeaten in regular season play and ranked No. 1 in the state coaches poll, sur vived some late game errors to defeat third-ranked Elmira 61-59 in overtime Monday. In other first round action, Coquille beat Newport 60-51; Vale riddled North Catholic 67-50 and Central look advan- San Jose State Track Team Defeats OSU San Jose, Calif. -IUP1I- Soph omore Dwight Middlclon won two events and anchored the winning 440 relay Monday to spark San Jose Stale to a 78 'j lo 66' 2 victory over Oregon State's track and field forces. Midclleton won the 440 in :44.9 and the 220 around a curve in :21.4 and he anchored the 440 relay to victory in :41.4. He also ran the final lap of the mile relay in which the Spartans hit the tape first in 3:15.6, but were disquali fied because of lane infrac tion. San Jose's Bob Lovcjoy won the high jump at 6-9' 4. Oregon State's Gary Sten lund threw the javelin 253 S'.i for first place. Beaver Norm Hoffman cli maxed the half mile with a slrnng finish to whip San Jose's Mike Gibcau. Hoff man's time was 1:49.5. The club has had prob lems with aggressiveness but has improved, Harvey says. Highlander speed is not ex ceptional but Paul Michael is dangerous. Both man-for-man or zone defense can be used. The Eugene writer lists Marshall as strong all around with possible exception of its bench strength which has im proved recently. The club is good defensively with man-for-man and some zone. The Portland team has a run and shoot offense which uses the long pass. Stan Koltsch (6-3) and Nick Jones (6-2) are men A-2 Semi tagc of Yamhill-Carlton's ball handling mistakes for a 71-64 victory. Yamhill-Carlton was sched uled to meet North Catholic at 2 p.m. today in consolation play. Newport and Elmira were slated for a consolation bracket game at 3:45 p.m. Henley lad Elmira by 10 points in the third quarter, but Elmira caught up and went ahead. Henley's 6-8 cen ter, Kent Gooding, tied the score 55-55 at the end of regulation play. Gooding and LceVoy Young and Steve Roiling were the winning scorers in overtime, and Gooding was Elmira's high scorer with 21. Henry Drummond netted 28 for El mira, 15 in the final quarter. Coquille defeated Newport with a fourth quarter rally on the outside shooting of Dave Wood and Tom Leatherwood. Wood was high point man with 20 and his team led at halftimc 32-28. (UPll Oregon Stale handed Arizona its sec ond defeat of the young base ball season Monday 6-2. Cecil Ira went the distance for the Oregonians. allowing just two hits the first six in nings, llomeruns were hit by Terry Markhani of Oregon Slate and Bobby Maxwell of Arizona. Four runs off starter Grant Wallke started the Beavers on their victory drive. 11 was their first game of ihe season. The same clubs meet today and again on Wednesday. Valley MEDFORDvlS&TRIBUNE Butts' Attorney Asks Post To Retract Story Atlanta (UPII An attorney for former Georgia Athletic Director Wally Butts Monday night demanded that the Sat urday Evening Post retract and correct an article entitled "The Story of a Football Fix" in its current publication. The lawyer, William H. Schroder Jr., also requested the magazine in a telegram to print an editorial specifically repudiating the article which accuses Butts and Alabama football Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant of conspiring to rig the 1962 Georgia-Alabama game. Oak Knoll Tops RVCC In Match Ashland -Oak Knoll Men's club defeated Rogue Valley Country club of Medford 41 to 34 Sunday in a team golf match at the Oak Knoll course. Dom Provost Jr., of the Ashland team was low net with 66 and Carl Schmidt, playing for Oak Knoll, was low gross with 70. Bob Weaver netted 67 and Dave Snyder 68 for the Ash land team. Al Akins took sec ond low gross prize for Oak Knoll with a 76 and Bill Sey mour third low with 82. Stewart Low Ray Stewart fired low net for the Medford club with a 71. Duke Anderson and Bob Phillips tied for second low prize with 72 and Bob Maemz took third low with 73. Dr. Dave Engleson had 75 low gross for Rogue Valley. Other low gross prizes for RVCC went to Justin Smith with 77 and John Nuich with 78. A ham and egg breakfast preceded the match. He said the telegram was a for mality required by Georgia law as a basis for seeking punitive action. Both Butts, who resigned last month to end a 25-year era at Georgia, and Bryant have denied the allegation in the March 23rd edition of the Post. The article said George Burnett, an Atlanta insurance man, through some communi cations freak, was cut into a long distance telephone con versation between Butts and Bryant last Sept. 14. Burnett, according to the article, said he heard Butts giving Bryant Georgia's of fensive plays and other stra tegy for the Sept. 22 game which Alabama won 35-0. Burnett said Monday he was motivated only by "an impulsive desire that the truth be known" when he re vealed the alleged telephone conversation, and he felt the "truth will be eventually told in full" after an investigation. Lorenzen Wins 500 Atlanta-IUPD - The Atlanta 500 almost retained its repu tation as a rainmaker Sunday but a last-second change in the weather produced a rain bucket full of records instead, New speed records were set at every check point as de fending champion Fred Lor enzen of Charlotte, N.C., and Elmhurst, III., roared to vic tory at an average speed of 130.592 m.p.m. before mc than 60,000 fans. Burleson Will Run At LA Eugene -IUP1I- Dyrol Burle son, three-time NCAA mile champion while at the Univer sity of Oregon, plans to run in that event May 17 in the Coliseum Relays in Los An geles. Also scheduled for the mile there are Peter Snell, the world record holder from New Zealand, and Jim Beatty, holder of the American mark of 3:56.3. Burleson ran second to Snell last May 19. Snell's world mark is 3:54.4. Burleson's best mile time is 3:57.6. MEDFORD MOTORS 225 South Riverside Game Probe Given Approval Salem - (UPII - A resolution setting up an investigation of the State Game Commission was approved by the House Fish and Game Committee Monday at the start of a meet ing attended by some 200 hunters. The sportsmen had gather ed to testify on the measure. The Senate-passed resolution was sent to the House floor, where passage was certain. The sportsmen remained to testify on another bill that would restrict deer and elk hunting during the next two years. A group of hunters has complained that deer and elk herds are vanishing. Supporters of the State Game Commission have gen erally agreed that the interim investigation will help clear the air.
