All the pockets in the hunting coat were always empty, ex cept the back game-pocket. In it rode a little animal with yellowish - white fur and sharp, beady, blood - red eyes. The animal bumped along in the back pocket, and oc casionally stuck out its little pointed head to see what was happening in the big outdoor world. While he walked, the man's eyes were constantly search ing, looking for evidence of frejh piles of earth that would mal had dug itself a burrow, indicate where burrowing ani Frequently he found one. He would examine the opening carefully. Reaching back into the game - pocket he would pull out the small, red - eyed animal - a lithe, slender -bodied ferret. He would speak to the little animal in a soft, low tone, then set the ferret into the entrance of the bur row. Exploding Ball of Fur Minutes later there would be a rattling of small stones, followed by an exploding ball of fur as the frightened rab bit came boiling out of the ground. The man would watch the rabbit go and laugh; to him it was great sport Squatting by the burrow lie would call the ferret by name. Either because of the familicr voice, or because the burrow was now empty, the animal would come hurrying out. Into the game - pocket it "would go again, and again the man would start hunting another burrow, the little domesticated relative of the weasle riding along in the rumble scat. It was somewhat of an ac complishment, the training of a ferret to come when called. The man felt a little proud and it was great fun walking the woods and fields just to see a scared rabbit take to the tall timbers. The ferret is just about the wildest of the domesticated animals, usually not easily trained. The use of the ferret in rabbit hunting is. of course, unethical, as well as unlawful, but this man was really not hunting. At least, he was not interested in kill ing. He was just looking for an excuse to be afield, as well a being interested in seeing the "rabbit run." 'Million Hals' The hobby, If this could be called a hobby, paid off in a big way one day when the man offered to lend the fer i CDUL0 HAVE THE MOWE ONE. ' GAZER? Its sensitive pink nose quivered excitedly. He went to work. In a few minutes the listening men heard the squeals of frighten ed and injured rats. The fer ret was "having a ball." It was not only his greatest hour, it was his most glorious day. For the first time in his life it was hunting without restraint. There was plenty of "game," and his master did not call. It was nearly two days later, when the rat population was terribly decimated, that the ferret showed up. He was battle - scarred and weary. Both ears were ripped and his fur was rumpled and blood stained; he had fought a score of battles and had won every one of them. He had won the war, too. Story of October Storm Is Published Portland The full slorv of last October's Columbus Day wind storm is being pub lished as a paperback book.
