8 A f:::::fv THE REV. A. Q. ZARZA Here From the Philippines Custodians To Be Honored Sunday At 1st Christian "Nobody-God's Somebody1 is the title of the Rev. Fred rick Ross Evans' sermon at the First Christian church Sunday morning. At the first service the youth quartet will sing "The Lord Is My Shepherd." The carillon choir will sing "Jesus. Saviour, Pilot Me" at the 10:55 a.m. service. The coffee hour following the second service will honor Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Bailey, ' who have been the church custodians for many years. Hostesses are Mrs. Clarence Hunter, Mrs. I. R. Perry and Mrs. Bill Brooks. The closing session of the Schools of World Outreach will start at 6 p.m. The study will be an evaluation of the church outreach program here. Mr. Evans will lead the discussion for the adult group. Following the classes there will be a dessert tasting and fellowship hour. Pastor's classes on church manship will begin March 23 and continue for three weeks. Juniors will meet each Satur day from 10 a.m. until noon. Junior High and High School students will have their classes each Sunday evening starting March 24. Youth Week To Be Observed Sunday Youth week will be ob served at First Southern Bap tist church beginning Sunday morning. Youth Pastor will be Fred Everson. Jeanne Hobbs will direct the choir. At the worship hour young members of the church will give testimonials on "What Christ Means To Me." Speak ers besides Mr. Everson will be Roselyn Allen, Jerry Pitts and Malinda Homer. Harold Lane will act as Sunday School Superintend ent and Dean Hunt will serve as Training Union director. Ushers will be Jimmy Pope, Dennis Case, Bob Maynard and Jerry Pitts. MARCH IS. 1963 Congregationalists List Guest's Events The Rev. Amadeo Q. Zarza, senior minister of the United Church of Christ, Baguio City, The Philippine Islands, will be the guest of the Medford Congregational church next week, arriving in Medford on Wednesday. During the past four months he has been visit ing the C o n g r e g a t i o n a 1 Churches of Oregon. A native of The Philip pines, Mr. Zarza is a graduate of Silliman university and re ceived his theological train' ing at Union Theological sem inary in New York City and United Seminary in Dayton Ohio. Wednesday evening he will be the guest speaker at meeting of persons interested in joining the church soon. He will speak about the world mission of the church. Thursday morning he will be the guest of the Laymen s Fellowship at a breakfast meeting to be held at the Town House Cafe at 6:30 a.m. Thursday noon he will speak to the monthly meeting of the Women's Fellowship which will be held at the Red Cross building. Members of the Wo men's Fellowship of the First Congregational church of Ashland have been invited to attend. Meeting With Youth Thursday evening a special meeting for junior and senior high school young people will be held at the home of Mr, and Mrs. John Smock, 108 Geneva St., in order that the Foursquare Topic Is Family Week Family week will be the theme for Sunday school at the Foursquare church, 2200 Roberts rd. The person taking an entire family will receive a prize. Each Sunday, a theme will be announced. The contest which starts Sunday, will con tinue for six Sundays. It is sponsored by the Northwest District Foursquare churches, and involves 23 churches in the area. The Rev. K. L. Mathewson said that the theme is "Fish ers of Men." This emphasis reaches a peak at the pre- Easter season when the church launches its annual outreach to gain new members. The Rev. Roy Mourer. dis trict supervisor, announced that cash awards are to be given to the outstanding Sun day schools during the drive. Presentation of these awards will be made during the Northwest District convention in Portland In May. A young people's rally will be held tonight at 7 o'clock In the Grants Pass church. 450 Southwest J st. Quiz teams will begin working for com petition. Bethel Assembly Announces Services At Bethel Assembly of God's 11 a. in, worship service Sunday, the pastor, the Rev. Lawrence D. Krnusc, will speak on the subject, "Life's Most Profitable Lesson." It will be the last in a series of messages taken from the Epis tle of Paul the Apostle to the rnuippinns. Parables Continue The Parable of the Talents, which is found in Luke 19 will be the subject of the ser mon the Rev. Robert W. Tuli, minister of the Congregation' al church, will preach on Sunday. This is the third in a series of Lenten sermons on the Parables of Jesus' Last Days. The regular Sunday service of worship of the Church will be held at Hoover Grade school. This Is the temporary meeting place of the church until the new church is built at the corner of East Jackson st. and Berkeley Way. Both the service and the Church school will be at 11 a.m. Child care and classes for all children from infancy through ninth grade will be offered at Hoover school dur ing the worship hour. OREGON CHURCH NEWS National Religious Publicity Council Area Church st., at 11 a.m. Saturday. Mr. Biggs has done extensive work in the line of Religious Liberty since his retirement as Oregon Conference presi dent in 1959. He will acquaint church members with recent developments throughout the United States in this field. Wednesday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m., E. H. Bergman, who heads the Sabbath School work for the Oregon Confer ence will meet with Medford and vicinity Sabbath School division leaders in the cradle roll room in the Medford church. Mr. Bergman will present demonstrations in the use of visual aids in the cradle roll, kindergarten, primary, junior and youth depart ments. Representatives from eight churches in the area have been invited to attend. Series Continues Duane Corwin is continu ing his series of "It Is Writ ten" lectures at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tues day in the American Legion hall in Central Point, and on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights in the grade school gymnasium in Shady Cove. The color film, "One in 40,000" will be a feature of the Sunday and Wednesday night programs. This film al lows the viewer to witness the actual surgical removal of a diseased lung, and points out the link between cigarette smoking and cancer. Title of the accompanying lecture will be "Suicide on the Install ment Plan." Monday and Thursday nights Mr. Corwin's subject will be "Europe Past, Pres ent, Future," and the film, "Customs of the Holy Land." "Cain and Abel" will be shown on Tuesday and Friday nights, and Calvary at Sinai' is the scheduled lecture. Registrations Still Taken for Series Registrations are still being taken for the new series of inquiry classes which were started this week by the Rev. G. N. Lulay for persons de siring to become acquainted with the teachings of the Roman Catholic church. According to Father Lulay, an assistant pastor at Sacred Heart church, the classes will be held from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. each Monday and Thursday until the first week in June. The sessions are open to all adults of the community. Members of the Catholic con gregation are invited to at tend the classes with their non-Catholic friends and rela tives. It has been stressed that no one will become obligated to the church by attending any part or the whole of the series Questions from the inquirers will be encouraged. "Life in Christ. Instructions in the Catholic Faith," a new text by the Rev. James Kil gallon and Gerard Weber, is being used in the classes. Copies of the text may be obtained at the time of regis tration. All classes will be held in the eighth grade class room on the second floor of St. Mary's Grade school, 11th and Ivy sts. Series ot Messages To Begin at Central John V. Hcberling, minis ter of Central Church of Christ, 1440 South Oakdale ave., will begin a scries of messages Sunday at the 11 a.m. worship hour. The scries, entitled "Facing Life With Jesus," will end on Easter Sunday. Morning messages will deal with how Jesus met life's ba sic problems; evening mes sages with the resources upon which He drew. Sunday's topics will be "Finding Prin ciples To Live By" and "Jes us And The Family." Evening worship is at 7:30 p.m. Loyalty Month will contin ue to be the emphasis at the Bible school hour with each class endeavoring to meet its goal and place its banner at the top of the flagpole. Bible school begins with a combin ed opening assembly at 9:45 am. Unity Church to Have Guest Speaker The Rev. Joseph K. Stieg- ler, minister of the Unity Church of Tacoma, Wash., will be guest speaker for the Unity Church of Medford, Holly and Haven sts., at the 11:15 a.m. service Sunday. His subject will be "Tell No Man". The text is taken from Luke 5:12-14. This will carry out the Lenten theme of "Conservation for that week. The Rev. Katharine Bos worth, minister of Unity Presbyterians Note Sermon Topics and Music Dr. D. Kirkland West will use as his sermon theme, "Choice of Masters" at the First Presbyterian church Sunday. Mrs. A. L. Clay will sing, "How Lovely Are Thy Dwel lings" for both morning serv ices and the senior high choir will sing "My Eternal King" at 9:30 a.m. hour. The chan cel choir will be heard in the anthem, "The Lord Is My Shepherd" at 11 a.m. The adult membership class will meet with Dr. West Sun day at 5 p.m. and both the youth and adult classes will meet the session March 24. Jack Hamilton, youth work er and leader in Youth For Christ International, will ad dress the Adult Family hour group at 6:30 p.m. in the fire place' room. At the same hour, Lonny Fendall of George Fox col lege, Newberg, who is presi. dent of Friends Youth Chris tian Endeavor of the North west, will speak to a com bined meeting of junior high age and teens. The Over-50 group of Med ford Friends will hold its monthly potluck dinner in the) Fellowship hall following the Sunday morning service. The evening Family hour adult group which has been a Bible Fellowship led by the pastor in recent weeKs, nas invited Mr. Hamilton to speak on the opportunities and re sponsibilities which are open to the church in its youth program. A "spiritual foster parent" plan in which con-. cerned Christian adults will be asked to shepherd the spir itual welfare of individual young people through person al interest and prayer will be introduced. Youth speaker, Lonny Fen dall, was present for the Fa ther and Son dinner held Fri day night in the Medtora church. After discussing the Friends' youth program in the Northwest with local C.E.'ers, he will preach at the Talent Friends church of the evening service. The Over-50 club, some times known as the Young in Heart, recently reorganized with Mrs. Charles Klutsen beeker of Central Point, as president. All adults are in vited to these informal din ners held each month, usually followed, by singing and visit ing. The second in a series of pre-Easter messages will ba given by the pastor, J. L. Willcuts, titled, "What Does It Cost To Be Happy?" These are based on Christ's Sermon on the Mount. The Friends Youth Hobby night which ordinarily would meet on Tuesday night, is postponed one week to Marh 26, when Officer George Lu cas of the Medford Police de partment, will present a lec ture and film on driver train ing. A Christian training ses sion is led by the pastor dur ing each Hobby night. Series of Sermons The ' Rev. Charles R. Mc Donald, pastor of St. Luke's Methodist church, will con tinue his series of sermons on the Life of Jesus Sunday at the 11 a.m. worship. The title will be "A Day in Caper naum." The Methodist Youth fel lowship will meet Sunday un der the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Chlpman. Craig Horton and Sharon Chipman are in charge of arrange ments.
