Blackmoore has been appointed as the city recorder by the Cave Junction City Council, replacing Mrs. Kenneth Caldwell, who resigned in order to join her husband in Paulina, Ore. Blackmoore is a bookkeeper, and serves as treasurer of the Illinois Valley Democratic club. He is also a member of the executive board of Glenn Morrison American Legion post here. He has lived in the area several years. Mrs. Caldwell served as recorder for 12 years and at one time she and her hus band owned the store now known as Eggcrs Sporting Goods. We were among the many visitors at Bill Duggan's Land of Many Oaks, smoglcss homes for eye irritated Calilornians. The air was so pure and the vision to crystul clear that one interested spectator almost walked through a closed glass door. Civil defense we believe is all righl and could be a great help in emergencies, like Hoods, fires, and acci dents, If it would get on the ball and be there when needed, but it has been our experience that in emergen cies it is the stale police and the Red Cross that get there first. The Stale Grange advises farmers to vole "yes" on the farm bill to be voted on later this summer. The associ ation of bankers also strongly urges a "yes" vote by farmers. They feel thai farmers will not be able to pay off their loans should the farm bill be defeated. Although many do not know it, wheat supports are not a new thing and arc not used only in the U.S. Nearly all wheat producing countries use government price support systems. In 37 wheat producing countries with price supports, the highest support is S2.97 per bushel in West Germany, and the lowest, Argentina, with $1.16. Recently, wc listened to a man going to great lengths Idling over Ihc radio that we were fast losing our rights of free speech, but at the same lime he was lambasting to the high heavens some of our government agencies, particularly those who regulate radio time. This reminds us thai the right of free speech doesn't mean that you can make speeches that are of a seditious nature and inclined to incite riots. At the close of the local ballot theft trials here. Judge Skipworth of Eugene, Oregon, who was the presiding judge, gave this advice. The next time someone mounts your courthouse steps and starts making an inflamma tory speech, arrest him on the spot. L. A. Banks had done this, and had a yard full of listeners. Skipworth believed if we had lowered the boom on Banks at that lime, we would not have had the trouble, turmoil, and trials that cost the county some $80,000. A check of a school register of District 44, back in 1888, gives the names of 37 children, all of them of school ago. The census was taken by Dr. Stanley, who was school clerk at that time, and lived in the house now occupied by the Elmo Stallings family. This is the oldest house in the district, and was built by Dr. Stanley back in the 80 s where he maintained his office. His medicine cabinet is still intact. District No. 44 was the name of this district before consolidation. Mr. and Mis. Dave Huffman and young son, of Eagle Point, will be moving into their new home now being completed by Bill Duggan, the builder of modern homes. This house is on the Wheeler road, northwest of the Wheeler farm. Checking over our hist Tablets, we found wc had omitted several things that happened in days gone by, and which we remember better than happenings of six months ago. For instance, we remember when mother at bedtime would have we kids say this little prayer: "Now, I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If 1 should die before 1 wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take." And believe it or not, 1 remember my fust sweetheart. Wc went to school together back in the nineties, she was five, and I was six. Puppy love I suppose. Wc were very much interested in E. A.'s recent editorial on joblessness and dignity. This is right up the alley of the Grange organiiation. They believe that in all work there should be dignity, and leach it to new candidates through the ritual and by the lecturers. Of course they think argicultural work is the more digni tied ot all", and claim thai agriculture is the first and noblest of all occupations and the only one Instituted by the Creator.
