MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON MONDAY. MARCH 11, 1963 ,B 5 Students Record Comics for Blind Paterson, N.J. (UPD A gun bangs, a dog barks, a small, worried feminine voice cries: "Sandy!" What's going on? It is may hem or murder? No. Those are the sounds of magnetic tape faithfully unreeling the trials and tribulations of age less "Little Orphan Annie" and her dog, Sandy. The taping of "Little Or Dennis the 'Hello, Dennis! This ismjur Try and P rr II i 1 1 fey BENNETT CERF- AfiETIRED ARMY GENERAL, unaccustomed to speak .ing before civilians, was trapped into being the guest of honor at a huge testimonial dinner and, of course, had to acknowledge all the flowery tributes paid to him by the other speak-. ers. Before he arose, the general confided to the master of ceremonies. "I'm scared for the first time in my life. I know I'm going to blow this." The m.c.'s encouraging reminder was, "It doesn't make much difference what you say, General. After all, nobody expects much!" Two married men were comparing notes on their respective wives. "I took mine out to the racetrack for the first time Sat urday afternoon," boasted one, "and she won four races." "Re markable," admitted his frUnd. "My wife gets winded after one cha-cha." "You're cured," an analyst told his long-time patient cheerily. "Never again will you suffer from the delusion that you are President Kennedy." "What wonderful news," exulted the patient "Where's your phone? I must call Jackie and tell her at once!" O 1963. by Bennett Cerf. Dittrlbuted by King- Features Syndicate "Th Daily phan Annie," "Dick Tracy," "Blondie," "Winnie Winkle" and other comic strips is a i New Jersey school project undertaken by student volun teers for the benefit of blind children. This is Operation Comic Strip at Eastside High school here. It is administered by a director of student activities. Joe Frank, who is himself Menace girl friend. I just called Stop Me m S2,c hi 99 Million Consumers Read a Daily Newspaper Each Weekday These readers make up the largest audience available to any advertiser in any medium. A recent study of this national newspaper audience shows that it in cludes 80 percent of all men and women over 21 ... and 72 per cent of all teen agers, age 15 and over. This huge and consistent readership can be depended upon by advertisers because the daily newspaper is a habit with most people . . . an established part of their everyday lives. For the national advertiser, this amounts to almost the total market for any product. For the local advertiser, this massive readership symbolizes the local reach of his own local newspaper - into almost 9 out of 10 homes every day. Nfo matter what the product or service an advertiser wants to sell, more people can read about it in the pages of the daily newspaper. Ntwtpaptr And It's Reading blind, and 50 students. After School Most of the rehearsing and recording Is done in students homes after school hours. The completed tapes are delivered to the New Jersey Camp for the Blind at Marcella and to Paterson's School No. 2. What is the response? One note from a blind boy simply read: 'Thank you for the tapes, liked the comics. Some of the comics are funny. We lis ten to the tapes on Friday. Even your practice tape was good. Tell the children I like the tapes very much." Typed The note had been careful ly typed on a raiseddot Braille typewriter. And one of the student vol unteers said of Operation Comic Strip: "The expressions on these kids' faces as they listened to our recording are something I'll always remember." The students use three tape recorders to dramatize the comics. One recorder has pre corded sound effects, with dogs barking, guns booming or whatever a comic strip sit uation might call for. A sec ond recorder has a pre-recorded tape with lead-in mu sic by the school's band and by the choral groups. The third recorder captures all the sounds and dramatiza tions of the comics. A reel of tape runs about 50 minutes, but each tape takes four hours of rehearsal. Non-serialized comics are re corded every two weeks dur ing the school year. Serials are recorded once a month to give four weekly episodes in one tape. Frank, because he knows the problems of the blind, cautions his volunteers that their voices must make up for in sound what blind children can't see. "All visual expres sions must be brought out through your voices," Frank admonishes. "You have to make your voice denote ex citement, fear, or whatever emotion is necessary to the comic strip." Trank has answered inqui ries from more man ou schools wanting to start Op eration Comics Strips of their own and has prepared his own detailed how-to-do-it me morandum available to any one who asks for it. One congratulatory note Yturri Released From Salem Hospital Salem - (UPD - State Sen. Anthony Yturri (R-Ontario) was released from the Salem Memorial hospital Sunday. Yturri, 48, the senate mi nority leader, was taken to the hospital from the Capitol Building Friday morning aft er complaining of feeling ill. Dr. Ralph Purvine, his physi- cian, said he was suffering I 'from fatigue. Public," Audits and Survtyt held in high esteem by all the student volunteers reads in part: . . . "If we but look around us, there is so much we can do to show our love and concern for our neighbor. and the activities of these boys and girls in providing, by means of Operation Comic Strip, such unique entertain ment for the blind children of their community is to be commended indeed . . ." The letter was in reply to one sent by Marsha Cohen, an Eastside student. It was signed by Ralph A. Dungan, special assistant to President Kennedy.
