The Medford Twister of the tnaplccourt, which rumbled through the last half of its conference slate without loss, wrote finis to the regular 1962-1963 campaign Saturday night with its eighth victory in a row 84 to 63 over the Crater Comets of Central Point; It was a thunderous blue flame rendition by the Whirl wind. And, Crater, in conten tion for league laurels right up to the circuit's final night, was almost as hot. The Fire balls, still within range after three sizzling, fast moving periods, however, could col lect only seven markers in the final chapter, Medford kept up the scoring tempo of pre vious quarters with 20. Medford shares the confer ence and District 6 A-l man tle with the Cavemen of Grants Pass. Each concluded 11-5 in the loop. Crater took third place .with 9-7. Drawing Held Lebanon will be the open ing round rival of the Tor nadoes at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the state tourney at Eugene. Grants Pass will take on South Salem at 2 2 p.m. on March 20. That was settled at noon yesterday when Principal Lester Harris and Lee Ragsdale of the Med ford faculty met with Jeff Loiter of the GP school staff for a drawing at Gold Hill. South Salem and Lebanon are the District 8 (Valley league) representatives In the tournament. The Black Tornad oes scared the hoop nets Saturday by pouring through 36 field goals at a .554 firing rale. They got their heavy scoring from Jack Fordo, Rich Bon ner and driving Mike Neath amer and were bulwarked be neath the board by the tall combination of Jim Hill, forde and Bcnner. Ford Scorn 24 Medford grabbed the lead for keeps near the end of a fiery back and fourtli first quarter. The Tornadoes of Coach Frank Roclandt headed 20 to 17, 40 to 33 and 64 to 58 at the intermissions. Howard Tomlinson's free throw cut the margi nto 64 to 37 but that was the last Comet point for about 4'i minutes while Medford upped to 72 before the Central Pointers swished the net again. Fordo had 24 points, Bcn ner 20 and Ncathamer IS for Medford and Tomlinson 23 and Pat Pepper 15 for the Comets. Bcnner's points were on 10 field buckets in 15 trios. Hill glommcd 12 rebounds, Fordo 10 and Bcnner nine. For Crater Tomlinson snag ged 10 and Paul Bransom 11. The Medfords had their high field average on 63 at tempts. Crater shot less, aver aging an even .300 on 27 goals in 54 shots. Rebounds, exclud ing several not recorded at the finish, favored Medford 3D to 20. Comets Pull Up Tornado cagcrs zipped off to an 8 to 0 lead on a long pusher and a tipln by Benner and Forde's jumper and his goal on a feed by Hill. Coach Lloyd Hoffine's Crater club pulled right up to 8 to 7 Bransom scored off a Mike Glincs pass from oulof bounds, Pepper hit a free shot and a long pusher and Glincs put In a driver bucket. Forde made It 10 to 7 with free throws. Glincs Jumpered from behind a screen. Then the back and forth bcaan Pepper put Crater on ton 11 to 10 with a Jumper from be side the circle. Hill hit for Medford from the base line. Bransom bagged a turning shot from the circle. Larry Vowcll's push from the cor ner was matched by Bran som's tipln. Forde came back with a turning shot from the circle but Tomlinson retali ated from close range. Score favored Crater 17 to 18. Lend For Good With 37 second remaining in the quarter, Brenner's Jumper from the ba.vcline gave Medford the lead for good at 18 to 17. Hilt plunked a tipper Just before the buzzer for the 20 to 17 score. Corvallis - lUPII Oregon State's Beavers held off a closing Oregon rally to post 71-85 victory over we Ducks before 7,390 basketball fans Saturday night. Seven-foot Mel Counts sparked the Beavers with 28 points and 18 rebounds. Oregon was bemnd BJ-oa with 2:47 left in the game but cut the margin to 64-62 in the next minute and 15 seconds after Oregon State took out its starters. The Beavers pulled away when their start ers went back into the contest. Steve Pauly scored 16 points and Terry Baker tallied 14 points for the Ore gon Staters, who ended their MAC SCORES 152 Eugene - IUPD - Multnomah Athletic Club of Portland wrapped up the Oregon Asso ciation age group girls' swim mnig championship here Sun day. MAC scored 152 points in the two-day meet. Aero Club of Portland was second with 129 points. Oregon's Jim Johnson and Steve Jones collected 25 and 16 points, respectively. The Ducks ended their season with an 11-15 record. The crowd gave Oregon State a season's attendance record of 96,004 in 12 home games. The previous high was 91,778 in 13 games In the 1953-54 season. The Medford club expand ed on a Vowell driver and a Hill shot on assist from Vowoll and the home club headed by five to nine points through the rest of the second panel. Ncathamer entered the game at this stiige to give Med ford some added spark. He tallied two snaking drivers and a push shut from the cor ner. Extend To 13 With Ncathamer, Forde, Bcnner and Vowell gelling points for the Medfords while Tomlinson, Alvarez and Pep per gnalcd for Crater, I h e Tornado built a i:i-point third quarter lead of 51! to 3D. Aft- 58 to 45, the Fireball whacked their deficit down to seven points before the half. G linos and Tomlinson hit from the gift mark and Pepper and Tomlinson from the field while Hill and Miles Ron led and Ncathamer and Forde got Medford free shots. Score was 83 to 56 before Forde's gifler. In the final canto Medford put in seven field shots to Crater's two. Two by Ucnncr were on long passes by Hill who had rebounded the ball off the Crater board. Reserves flooded into the game w t h 71 seconds lefl lo play. Medford scored 20 points in each of three quarters and 24 on the third. Crater had 23 in the third along with 17, 16 and seven in the others. The Junior Tornado push ed to 10 to 4 and 45 to 11 quarter and half differences. Medford led 53 to 27 after three periods. Ron Edmonds had 15 points and Rich Knight 12 for Med ford. Larry Pepper, Rt ss Burd and Vern Swanson each had nine for Crater. Medford also took the soph omore hassle played at the same lime on another court. Score was 45 to 33.
