Nor does it, re cord how he arrived at the Idea of allowing Gulliver to fall asleep on the ground and awaken to find his hands, feet and legs securely tied by the busy little people,. who had never before seen such a gi ant, and had tied him up in order to protect themselves. Swift published the story in the year 172B, and it has become something of a clas sic. Most children and adults have been fascinated by the story of Gulliver's Travels in the land of Lilliput. The little people had secured ropes, stakes and any and all, cordage they could find, and tied the giant securely. Comes Alive The old drawing came alive for us the other'day when we noticed a reenactment of Gul liver's predicament on the ground near a sidewalk. The "giant" in this living drama Gulliver himself, if we al lowed our imagination a free rein-was a large, black beetle who had stupidly knocked himself silly by crashing into a steel mailbox. Stunned by the impact, the beetle Jay on his back, his big legs' waving, feebly in .the air. Within minutes of the crash, the Lilliputians arrived. There were hundreds of these "little people," little blaclr ants each less than one hun dreth the size of the beetle. The six-legged Lilliputians were cautious. They seemed to know how dangerous the viol ently waving legs could be. They were taking no chances. One blow from a beetle leg could break an ant in half. Their concern was to keep the beetle from regaining his feet and escaping. Once in a while an ant, a little braver than his co-workers, would rush in and grab one of the beetle's legs. Sev eral of these venturesome lit tle creatures, misjudging their own ability, would be kicked and knocked end over end. One ant evidently suffered a broken log and was later car ried away by half a dozen other ants. . ." Us Sheer Numbers Finally, the Lilliputians de cided on a frontal attack. They would attempt to subdue the giant by sheer weight of numbers. They swarmed in, half a hundred of them. They clamored on the beetle, sink ing their mandibles into legs and anywhere they could get a fang-hold.. The sting of the biting jaws revived the giant. He must have realized the seriousness of his position. He struggled violently, throwing ants right and left. He rubbed one leg against another, scraping off i a dozen of the tiny attackers. I But he was a little slow on I recovering his strength. The I Lilliputians had arrived in overwhelming numbers, each biting and holding, and each injecting into the beetle's body a tiny bit of numbing i fluid. The giant's legs slowed ' their wild threshing. Shortly ; all they could do was quiver feebly then they were still. The little ants had subdued I the giant. Gulliver had been , overcome by these tiny, every I day Lilliputians.
