Abraham Kibicoft (D-Conn.) told a Senate banking sub committee Tuesday that "get ting to work and getting home again is just as impor tant as getting to the moon." But, the former cabinet of ficer said, Congress is spend ing billions to reach the moon, but is merely talking about spending millions to help commuters. Ribicoff's statements were perpared for presentation to the subcommittee in support of a mass transportation bill aimed at helping cities solve their traffic problems. Sen. Frank Lausche (D Ohio) opposed the bill. He said it was unwarranted in terference with state and lo cal affairs. Ribicoff disagreed, but said each state and region should work out its own solution to its own problems. "No single answer can or should come from Washington," he said. Families of Fliers Killed in Cuban Invasion Get Funds Miami-IUPD-A Central Amer ican anti-Castro group is pay ing $1,800 a month to the wives of four American fliers missing in the ill-fated Cuban invasion, an attorney has re vealed. Alex E. Carlson, attorney for the unidentified group, said the money was from a trust fund set up by Castro foes "after all hope was aban doned" for the American, pilots flying for them. The fund gave the four Bir mingham, Ala., women $225 each every two weeks since their airmen husbands were missing and belived killed April 19, 1961, near the end of the Bay of Pigs invasion. Flying Cargo Plane The checks, drawn on Bank ers Trust Co. of New York, have been received by Mrs. Riley W. Shamburger Jr., Mrs. Wade C. Gray, Mrs. Thomas Willard Ray and Mrs. Lee F. Baker. Mrs. Gray told United Press International earlier she re ceived the checks but did not know the sender. Mrs. Sham burger said she knew the sender, but declined to dis close the origin of the money. f.JKvV,-. A : 'v " ' v 'Jx : (UP1) Powell Committee Funds Slashed by Nearly $500, Washington-(UPII-A House subcommittee Tuesday voted a deep slash in the funds re quested by Chairman Adam C. Powell to run his Education and Labor committee. The accounts subcommittee recommended that the con troversial New York Demo crat be given $200,000 to run his committee for the next year. Powell had sought $697, 000 for two years. The action now must be en dorsed by the full House Ad ministration committee. The rejection of a two-year budget was not regarded as a slap at Powell. The Admini stration Committee has been holding everyone to one-year appropriations. But the cut, $148,500 out of a one-year request for $348, 500, was much deeper than the veteran Negro congress man had expected. Carlson said several fliers were recruited to fly against Castro during the invasion, and the four Birmingham air men were flying a C46 cargo plane converted for light strafing when they began hav ing trouble and were presum ed crashed. Were Losing Altitude "The last we heart from them they were losing altitude with one engine out," Carlson said. The wives said the airmen were recruited in January, 1961, and left in February saying their destination was classified. Several of the women have said they believed the men were working for the Central Intelligence Agency or some other government unit. The CIA, however, said it adheres to a policy of silence regard ing the invasion. Carlson said Monday the Central American group auth orized the Double Check Corp. of Miami Springs to set up the trust fund. The attorney refused to identify the Central American group. But he did say that several wealthy Cuban exiles were contributors. I i looks on.
