Lower Rates To Be Noted Here
Electric rate reductions ap
proved by Oregon Utility
Commissioner Jonel Hill lor
Pacific Power and Light com
pany's service areas in south
ern Oregon will be reflected
in customer accounts within
a week following meter read
ings March 22 and thereafter,
the company has reported.
"Customers should begin
receiving bills based on the
lower rates within a week
following the March 22 ef
fective date of the PUC ap
proval," according to Frank
Bash, Medford, vice presi
dent and Copco division man
ager for PP&L.
In approving the rate re
visions that will save electric
consumers $1 - million annu
ally, the state utility commis
sioner noted the rate cut was
the largest downward adjust
ment ever made in Oregon by
an electric utility.
The reduction averaging
5.6 per cent represents annual
savings of $543,000 to the 59,
000 residential customers and
$500,000 to 9,700 commercial
and industrial customers In

Dog lag Dates Back to 1909
A Medford man icccntly
lound a Medford dog tag.
number 00, issued in March,
lDOD, in an old house on
Barllelt si.
With this find, a searrh of
the Mcdlnrd ordinances show
ed that the city's first dog
licensing ordinance was num
ber 61 and became effective
April 1, 1A89.
With this ordinance, Med
ford received $1.25 for each
dog license sold, 25 cents of
which was retained by the dog
catcher.
This ordinance was repeal
ed March 8, 18D4, with Ordi
nance 128, which changed the
amounts for the licenses from
only one set amount to $1.25
and $2.75. This remained In
effect tpntll April 1, 1912,
when Ordinance 655 set the
license fees at $1 50 and $3.
The dog catcher still retained
251 cents of each license fee.
Tile old dog tag was dis
covered by E. II. Peebler in
an old dresser in the Bart
lctt St. house.
While reading the old hand
written ordinances of the
1800s, It was noted that Or
dinance 1 for the City of
Medford, effective Dec. 10,
1888, prevented persons from
loitering about the depot and
cars of the Southern Pacific
railroad. The most recent or
dinance approved by the
Medford city council is num
