Ashland - Southern Oregon college is now a participat ing institution under the United Student Aid Funds, Inc.. Dr. Elmo N. Stevenson, college president announced. Under the plan a student may borrow up to SI. 000 per year with the total not to ex ceed J3.000. The total bor rowing capacity of SOC is $25,000. Application for USAF loans may be obtained in the office of the director of student af fairs and submitted to area banks for completion of the processing. Dr. Stevenson said. SOC Student Wins First Place in Tourney Oratory Ashland - Linda Hale, a Southern Oregon college coed from Hawthorne, Nev won first place in women's ora tory at the Tournament of Champions last week end at Linfield college. Forty col leges and universities repre senting the western and mid western areas of the United States were in attendance. Dr. Harold Barrett, advi ser, who accompanied the SOC team, reported that the squad had been successful, naming Carol Sandberg, Coos Bay, who won second place in the women's oral interpreta tion; Gary Watts, Ashland, who placed fourth in men's or iginal poetry; Faye Palmer ton, Rogue River, ranked first in two of three rounds of women's oratory; and Bar bara Gysin, Phoenix, who scored high in salesmanship. Atter-Dinner Speaking High scores were obtained in after-dinner speaking by Karen Edgar and by Carol Sandburg, Coos Bay. Dr. Bar rett praised the work by Joy Farenhurst, Ashland, for her performance in intcview; Da vid Desmond, Ashland, in or iginal poetry; and Bruce Lat tin, Klamath Falls, in radio speaking. Other participants from SOC included Jim Manuel, Myrtle Creek; Ruth Osika, Coquillo; Don Benson, Eagle Point; Al Sherman, Douglas. Ariz.; and James Anderson. North Bend. Authorities said they would have to wait until dawn be fore bringing in grappling equipment in their quest for the body of Beatrice Sturde vant, 34, missing in the un usual accident and presumed dead. The bus, carrying 10 hos pital employees to lunch, careened through a guard rail on Welfare Island, plunged down a 25-foot embankment and disappeared below the surface of the river seconds after the driver collapsed at the wheel. Four of the passengers made it safely to shore through an emergency exit Welfare Island is a huge hospital complex about a mile and a half long and two-thirds of a mile wide located in the East River between Manhat tan and Long Island. Survivor Saves Woman One of the survivors, Rich ard Haas, 36, senior physical therapist at Goldwater Hos pital located on the island, fought his way through the rear exit of the bus and up to the surface with a woman grasping his coat tails. The woman, Mrs. Elizabeth Newton, a ward clerk at the hospital credited Haas with saving her life. "It was a horrible exper ience because I can't swim," Mrs. Newton said. "He pulled the rear . door open and climbed out. I got hold of his coat. When we came to the surface, he pulled me up to the rocks." Lt. Frank Fitz, a fire de partment skin diver, who plunged under the murky ice clogged river to mark the bus so it could be raised, brought up the body of . bus driver John Albert. "I found the front window of the bus and smashed it," Fitz said. "I managed to grope my way inside. You could see only three or four inches ahead. "I suddenly felt a hand.
