British anthropologist Louis S. B. Lakey, writing in the National Geographic maga zine, said the fossil fills "an enormous gap in the panor ama of man's development." Since finding the jawbone of an unknown primate dur ing a 1961 dig in Kenya, Lea key and his wife have had a chance to study its charac teristics and give it is scien tific name, Kenyapithecus wicKeri. Explaining the name. Lea kev said "Kenva. of rnnrcp indicates where the fossils were found, and pithecus is one of the endings frequently used in describing the higher primates of prehistoric times. Honors Friend "The last part of the name, Wickeri, honors my friend Fred Wicker, an orange grow er at Fort Ternan, who found the first fossils where Ken yapithecus was later disrnv. ered." Anthropologists avoid us ing the term "missing link" in pieceing together the story of human evolution. Leakey said Kenyapithecus "was not- emphatically not a man." But he said it had an es sential characteristic of present-day man, one never found in the same form among fos sil or living apes or monke. s. It is what scientists call' a "canine fossa." This, In hu mans, is a depression in the upper jaw that anchors a muscle which helps control lip movements of speech. No Information Leakey said "Until the dis covery 01 kenyapithecus, we had literally no information from Africa about any stage of man in that vast stretch of time" between Proconsul and its related stock of some 25 to 40 million vearc n ( and the Olduvai creatures who lived a little less than 2 million years ago. "There were only a few fossils elsewhere in the world from that period, and those allied In the direction of apes, not a man" he said. "Now at lease we have Kenyapithecus, which lived some 14 million years ago, and we are begin ning to explore our gap." He said presence of the canine fossa does not mean Kenyapithecus could speak, but it gave him that poten tial. The National Geographic society, which supports the work of the husband-wife Leakey team, said their re ports "suggest that Fort Ter nan is yielding abundant fos sils of odd creatures which the Leakeys will describe in detail when they visit Wash ington in March." The society said the Leak ey' "extraordinary finds in clude the first nearly com plete skull of Proconsul Afri canus, a very ancient creature which many scientists believe represents tne common stock leading both to man apes." and LOT OF TRASH New Orleans -Cnu It was a whopper of a Mardi Grai cele bration. Sanitation Depart ment Director John J. Cass reino said Wednesday his crews swept up 1 record 180 tons of trash left by revelers.
