People Can Find Rewards in Service To Patients, Aged Strange As It Seems v wx Nearly every person whether young, old or handi capped can find an oppor tunity for a satisfying and re warding experience in service to patients in nursing homes and homes for the aged," Mrs. Hale Pragoff, medical social worker with the Oregon state board of health, said at th; annual meeting of the Rogue Valley Council on Aging last week. "Unhappiness, fear, dis couragement and lack of in terest may lead to depression, physical regression and in creased dependence of many patients in nursing homes," she said. Volunteer programs often offer the key to prevent this increased dependence, and the board of health has as signed Mrs. Pragoff to encour age and help organize volun teer groups to supply many needed services which the nursing homes and homes for the aged are unable to do. "When people retire from active responsibility they do not retire from life," she said, and "service to patients re wards both the volunteer and the patient." Nursing houses and homes for the aged are a relatively new concept in the care of the elderly, and originally it was felt that furnishing room, board and nursing service was all that was necessary. Today there is a broader concept based on the realiza tion that physical existence is not enough at any stage of life, Mrs. Pragoff said. Too many patients are lonely and feel isolated and rejected. They need to feel useful and to have some satis factions which make life worth living. It is in this phase of care that the volun teer working with the admin istrator can be of value, she pointed out. Object of the volunteer pro gram, she summarized, is to help each person -find some moments of happiness, an in terest in life, a belief that someone cares, help him feel he is not forsottcn and to pre vent unhappiness. Qualifications for volun teers include a sincere inter est in older people, Die capa city to recognize the dignity and worth of an individual and (he willingness to' spend the time to learn how best to meet the needs, interest and abilities of patients, she added. The need for adequate training for volunteer work in nursing homes was empha sized at a later meeting with nursing home operators and members of the Friendly Visiting Service now working in some of the nursing homes in Medford. Mrs. Pragroff stated that it is part of her job to help fur nish this training and to re cruit volunteers. Mrs. Chester Guches, health chairman for the Rogue Valley Council, said there are now a number of volunteers working on the program through the Friendly Visitors Service of the Coun cil, but it is hoped the pro gram may be broadened and strengthened to include all of the nursing homes and homes for the aged in the county.
