Astronauts have it easy com- cause fasler heart and respi-' A miniature package of pared to freeway drivers in ration rates among motorists I electronic equipment design California, than astronauts experience at jed by Hughes Aircraft co. was I developed to register heart rate, respiration and galvanic skin response (GSR). "Comparing our data ob tained on the freeways with official reports on the astro nauts' condition shows that the average civilian cruising in 60-mile-an-hour congested traffic is likely to be more tense than a highly skilled astronaut cruising in his ?pace capsule," said Robert M. De Haven, manager of the Hughes Flight Test division. Nearing Panic Years of California freeway driving conditions a motorist : to appear calm and stoic when I if the truth were known, he is nearing panic. John G. Appel, 41, a plant ! safety engineer for Hughes, ! was one civilian "guinea pig" I used in the traffic experi ! ments. He has been driving ' 14 miles on the freeways , daily to and from work for j the past three years. ! "While driving in ordinary street- traffic Appel's heart rate was a calm 79 and Ms GSR reading showed him to 1 be- relaxed and at ease," re- ported DeHaven. "As he drove up the on ! ramp, Appel's heart rate ro: rapidly until it reached 111 beats per minute as he enter ed the heavy flow of traffic. At the same time his GSR peaked violently, showing a sharp rise in tension." Pulse Jumped The pulse rate GSR jump ed every time Appel changed lanes, applied the brakes r reacted to another vehicle cutting in front of him. The respiration rate rose gradual ly during the test. It reached a peak of 27 breaths per min ute and averaged 20.5. The breath rate for astro nauts John Glenn or Scott Carpenter never excelled 18 during space ventures. Their heart rates in orbit ranged from 80 to 90 for Glen., and 00 to 94 for Carpenter. Jarred Visibly "When a tire blowout was simulated by popping a pa per bag in the back seat, both subjects were jarred vis ibly," DeHaven said. "Respi ration was interrupted, heart rate rose sharply and GSR peaked so violently the indi cator jumped completely ff its scale. Momentarily, they were m a state of panic. Neither Glenn nor Carpen ter experienced heart rates as high as 155 during blast off in their space-bound cap sules. YOUR CHOICE Forest Service Asks to Reserve Recreation Lands An application to reserve approximately 220 acres of public land in the Rogue Riv er, Umatilla and Willamette National forests for public recreation and administrative purposes has been filed by the forest service, according to the bureau of land manage ment. Present campgrounds have been found inadequate to meet the increased number of visitors to Oregon national forest areas, the BLM states. Through its land office, the BLM is responsible for any reservations of public lands by any federal agency. The forest service requested the BLM Portland Land of fice to set aside approximate ly 100 acres in the Umatilla National forest for develop of six additional camp grounds. The plan is to devel op these areas under a five year project. Two Campgrounds Two campgrounds on Car berry Creek are in the plan ning for the areas in the Rogue River National forest. At present there are no camp grounds in the immediate areas and they are needed to provide facilities for present and future recreation. In the Willamette National forest improvements have been placed on the Pearl Creek administrative site, in cluding a guard station. The forest service wants the 40 acre area reserved to protect the government s investment, according to Stanley D. Les ter, land office manager. Lester said the forest serv ice requests that the land be closed to location and entry under the general mining j laws subject to valid existing i claims. Detailed Description I A detailed description of the affected land will be pub lished in the federal register. It will also be posted in the BLM land office in Portland, the BLM district offices in Baker, Salem and Medford, the courthouses at Medford, Pendleton, Heppner and Sa lem and in local post offices. The public is being given 30 days from the date of pub lication in which to comment on the proposal, Lester said. Written comments should be sent to manager, land office, bureau of land management, U.S. Department of the In terior, 710 NE Holladsy, Portland 12. Topic of her demonstration was the "Art of Oil Pairting Photographs." Mrs. Nelson explained the technique of blending colors to develop flesh tones and said hair is composed of a number of colors. She said there also arc many shades of green in the tree leaves and the painter should find himself observing the differ ent shades of colors in all of nature wherever he goes. The next meeting of the as sociation has been scheduled for March 4 at 8 p.m. at the Red Cross building.
