MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1963 C 9 Continental Shelf Off Oregon Differs From Average Area Corvallis - The waves that feature that covers an area wash the Oregon beaches hide a continental shelf that dif fers notably from the ever -e underwater area of coasts around the world, according to an Oregon State university oceanographer. The Oregon continental shelf is narrower, steeper, and deeper than the average continental shelf. Dr. John V. Byrne has found. The shelf - or the area ex tending from low water to the first pronounced increase of slope to deeper water - is about 0 miles wide in the Cape Blanco-Coos Bay area; elbows out to about 30 miles off Florence; thins back to about 15 miles below Tilla mook; and then broadens out again to about 35 miles off Astoria. Shelves around the world have an average width of 42 miles, slope only about hlf as steep as that off Oregon, and an average depth at the outer edge of 430 feet, com pared to about 480-600 feet off Oregon. Studies Ocean Bottom Byrne whose specialty is ocean geology, has been study ing the ocean bottom off Ore gon since he joined the OSU Oceanography department i 1960. Before that, he had been a research geologist for an oil company in Texas. The Astoria Canyon is a unique underwater feature off Oregon also, Byrne notes. The giant canyon is 4 miles wide where it crosses the edge of the continental shelf. It extends out in serpentine fashion some 60 miles to a depth of 6,000 feet. There, its identity as a canyon is lost on Astoria Cone, a fan-shaped of more than 3,500 square miles at a depth ranging down to almost two miles. "High points" are promi nent off the Oregon coast too, Byrne emphasized. About 300 miles west of ihr mouth of the Columbia is Cobr Sea mount. More spectacular than Mt. Hood, it rises from the ocean floor, 9.000 feet be low, to within 90 feet of the surface. 14-Mile Rise Stonewall Bank, located 17 miles southwest of Yaquina Bay, is a rise approximately 14 miles long and 9 miles wide with a crest that is only about 120 feet under water. And Heceta Bank, lying ap proximately 35 miles west of the mouth of the Siuslaw riv er is a shoal area 25 miles long, 6 to 8 miles wide, and less than 120 feet down. The two banks and some unnamed shoals lying be tween them may have possi ble economic value some day as off-shore oil drilling sites, Byrne believes. His work is one segment of the extensive program of re search under way by the OSU Oceanography depart ment on the ocean off Ore gon. The research vessel Ac ona, is used in gathering data. The supreme court opinion, written by Justice Kenneth O'Conncll, reversed a Mult nomah County Court decision. The lower court had order ed the board to reinstate the license on grounds the board's rules failed to define profes sional misconduct sufficient ly enough to specify the charges against the doctor. The lower court also said the doctor was charged only with administering drugs, and thus with a mere offer or attempt to commit abortion, rather than with actually pro curing an abortion. Adequate Standard The high court replied that the term "unprofessional con duct" is an adequate stand ard. It said the statute is sup posed to be broad because of the impossibility of catalog ing all the various possible types of professional misconduct. The high court said the board had a right to believe the two women, and their testimony, in turn, was suffi cient to sustain the charge against Dr. Mintz. In another case, the su preme court upheld Multno mah County Judge Ralph Hol man in a case involving ,i teen-age girl who suffered head and neck injuries when she dove into a shallow pool at Jantzcn beach. The judge, overthrowing a jury, had refused damages to the girl on grounds the pool was adequately posled Willi "shallow pool'' sings. The girl had contended the pool owners should have call ed more attention to the fact the pool was shallow on all sides. The high court replied that signs around the pool gave sufficient notice to a reason ably prudent person. Other cases: , S..
