MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21. I9S3 C 7 --2r-. --.-.:;;'- H-: sIKv,,:;: RESEARCH SUBMARINE The- first sub marine, a 2,000 pound, 12-foot research craft, ever build by the Department of Interior is shown on its maiden voyage be ing operated by technician Robert Kiwala, left, and James Squires. It was turned over to the department's fish and wildlife serv- vice laboratory at Tiburon, Calif., with plans to inspect San Francisco Bay and to study fish life. The sub can cruise two to six knots under water for 10 hours without surfacing and is controlled by an airplane type stick connected to hydroplanes and a rudder. (UPI) English Walk Too, Only Do It The Hard Way By JOSEPH BREU Southampton, England -tUPD -For you blase souls who have been everywhere and done everything, here's some thing new to try some time: go take a stroll under the liner Queen Elizabeth. It can be done it hs been done. It just takes a little status, nerve ana a strong back. There is a six-week period each year when you can walk under the Queen. That is the time she spends in drydock in Southampton for her an nual overhaul, which is per haps the world's biggest spring cleaning job. During that time, the liner is. scraped and painted, one of her four sets of engines is replaced, and the cabins and staterooms are all spruced up. In Pit To make your sub-liner trip, you will have to go to the bottom of the dry dock, which is a pit about 80 feet deep in which sets the QueCn Elizabeth, looking eerie and uncomfortable out of water. But from just under the bow of the ship, the ship's grace of line Is most evident. She looks sleek and beautiful. As you walk back' along the side, you notice that the 1,031 foot liner is neatly balanced in the center and along the sides on steel supports. To set it on the supports so that it will stay up requires pin-point accuracy. The cen ter of the bottom of the hull must be settled within one inch on the center support. Skin divers direct the opera tion from beneath the ship and if she misses the first time, the liner is refloated until she is perfectly set down. ' Like Cst Walking beneath the bot tom of the hull is like walking in a cave. For about 100 yards you walk stooped over in a space about four feet high. But there are compensations. To bump your head on 83,673 tons and survive is bracing to the ego. The overhaul on the Queen Elizabeth this year includes some extra features. To pre pare the Queen for her intro duction into the Caribbean cruise service out of New York, Cunard lines have de cided to add a new cocktail bar to the cabin-class lounge and to restyle with new soft furnishing 150 cabin class staterooms. During each of the over hauls over the next three years, Cunard will make ex tensive renovations on the Queen to modernize her and maintain her as one of the world's leading liners. Cun ard officials estimate the Queen Elizabeth will remain in service for the next 10 years.
