Bedford, Crater Clash at CP In League Hoop Scrap Friday Balls bounce again this week end in that casaba race court followers all are calling "crazy." More formally it is known as the Southern Ore g o n conference basketball campaign. And, it is any body's guess, yet, whether the chase will loosen up or will remain a tight-locked strug gle. In this Friday and Saturday nights' fare, opportunity is greatest for the Medford Black Tornado and the Crater High school Comets. So, inter est is running high in Friday's fracas between the two in tent aggregations. The closest neighbors in the circuit, the Fireballs and the Whirlwinds, collide at 8:13 p.m. at Central Point. But, for each, that battle is Just the first of two week end assignments. O n Saturday Crater entertains the Pelicans of Klamath Falls while Med ford goes to Ashland. One oth er scramble this week takes Grants Pass on Friday into the lair of the upset-ambitious Ashland Grizzlies. Chance For Lead Medford (6-5) has the chance to take over league leader ship, or a share of it, for the first time this season. Crater (7-4), deadlocked with Grants Pass for the lead, can regain lone front position. But, GP, with just one game, also has that sole lead opportunity. Klamath (6-6) will fight to keep itself within the range of first and second spots. Ashland (2-9) has seen its championship and state tour ney aspirations pass. But the Bruins are capable of inflict ing heavy damage on the am bitions of the other members of the loop. Friday's games will com plete the third time around in the circuit. On Saturday the fourth and final round will begin. Full House Foreseen A full house is expected to morrow night at Central Point. The north balcony, which has been enclosed and has served as the wrestling room, has been opened at the Crater gym. Bleachers are being installed to seat approx imately 300 fans. Even with these bleachers added all seats may be taken. Refs Picked for Pacific Coast Wrestling Tourney at Ashland Ashland - Names of three referees for the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Wrestling as sociation tournament have been announced by Meet Di rector Bob Bennett. They are Norm Martinson, Corvallis; Ed Dewitt, Olym pia, Wash., and Martin Ola barri, Pleasant Hill, Calif. The tourney will be on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2 at the Southern Ore gon college gym here. Bennett, who is wrestling coach at SOC, said that the officials were chosen on the basis of suggestion and vote of participating coaches. The picked received the most votes after suggestions were reviewed. Dowllt Heads Each of the referees will be busy simultaneously In the early competition since rival ry will be conducted on three mats. Consolations and finals will be refereed by Dewitt, who Bennett has selected as the head official. In his head capacity Dewitt will help with weigh-ins and will make final rulings in dis puted matters. Ashland and Medford High schools have donated the ex tra mats needed. Tickets are available in Ashland at the Mark Antony hotel, Fortmiller's Depart ment store and Southern Ore gon college business office. Medford ticket outlet is Lam port's Sporting Goods store. In Klamath Falls George Mill er will have tickets at Ore gon Technical institute. COACH QUITTING Lincoln, Neb. - (UPD - The Nebraska coaching career of Jerry Bush, former college and professional cage star, will come to an end July 1, he announced Wednesday. Bush who has an 81-127 rec ord in nearly nine seasons at the Cornhusker helm, said he was quitting "for the good of all concerned." All indications are that the Black Tornado, with a three-' game winning streak going, is anticipating the opportunity to stretch it farther. Although week end play was (till two nights away, Coach Frank Roelandt reported his charges "all set to go." He had noth ing special to report concern ing his club this week. The Medfords were working on offense against zone defense in preparation for Crater and on attack against man-to-man hoop protectipn in readying for the Bruins. The Tornado has been hard at it. Roelandt reported that the squad drilled "a little harder than usual" yesterday. "We'll taper off Thursday and hope for the best Friday and Saturday," he said. Comets Regrouping At Central Point, Comet mentor Lloyd Hoffine said, "We are sort of regrouping our forces. It's not that there is any major shakeup after a disastrous loss to Grants Pass last week end. But, it's a mat ter of pulling back together. Hoffine reported that Lou Alvarez will go into the week end play with just 1 Vi days of practice because of doctor's appointments. He has an in fection resulting from a "strawberry" on his hip. Junior varsity and sopho more games will precede each varsity ruckus. Jayvee games are set for 6:30 p.m. The Mcdford-Crater sophomore mixe also will be at 6:30 p.m. in Crater's multi purpose room. Sophomore tussles at Ashland will be at 5 p.m. At Central Point on Satur day, it will be a long day of basketball.
