(Ufl) Hardened Arteries Theory Jolted by Scientific Finding By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor New York (UPD The scien tific theory that high blood levels of cholesterol "harden" ; arteries and thus lead to heart attacks and "strokes" has been jolt ed by some hard - to - get , facts. These facts consisted . of blood cho- lesterol read- Delos smith 1 n g s Of 42 men during the last years of their lives and measurements of the "hardening" of their heart and cerebral arteries after they died. Three scientists found no connection between blood levels of cholesterol and other fats and the degrees to which heart arteries were "harden ed." This finding was so con clusive they were impelled to remark that "the lipid (fat) theory of atherosclerosis re mains unproved as far as the coronary arteries are con cerned." In brain arteries they found "significant relationships" be tween advanced "hardening" and high cholesterol levels in only four out of 15 brains. In two others their results were "negative," that is, low cho lesterol levels went with ad vanced "hardening" or the op posite. "These findings are so equivocal a final opinion can not be expressed," they re potted to "Circulation," which is the technical organ of the American Heart Association. The scientists are Drs. J. C. Patcrson, Rosemary Arm strong and E. C. Armstrong of the Canadian Veterans Psy chopathic Hospital and the University of Western On tario in London. Study 10 Years Old They were making their newest report on a study which has been going on for J" years. It involves 800 male patients with advanced men tal disease who are (or were) healthy of body. Hie scientific scheme is simple, direct and tactual. In life blood cholesterol levels are measured periodi cally. When a man dies, his heart and cerebral arteries are analyzed for degrees of hardening." Since the men are (or were) hospital custo dial cases, their diet is pre cisely known. All previous reports failed to find any connection be tween blood cholesterol and coronary arterial "harden ing." These had been scien tifically criticized on several grounds. One was that the men reported had been "very old" at the time of death -many deep in their 80s. An other ground for criticism was that some had died of wasting disease, such as can cer, and these could have in fluenced both blood fats levels and artery-hardening. In their new report the scientists took only men who had died between the ages of 60 and 69 years. "We do not concede that a man in his 60s is very old," they remarked. From the men in this age bracket they excluded those who died of any wasting dis ease. They took only those whose body weight at the time of death had been at or close to the "ideal" establish ed in insurance actuarial sta tistics. "It is well known, of course, that there is much more to the athero sclerotic process than the accumulation of lipid in arteries," they said. "Ab normal deposits of fibrous tis sure, blood and blood prod ucts, and complex carbohy drates also occur, and it is quite conceivable that one of these might be enhanced by hyperlipemia (high blood fats level)."
