MEDrORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON South Africa Is Subject of Talk South Africa is a land of amazing contrasts, Deanne Dayton, Grants Pass girl who recently returned from a year's study at Rhodes uni versity in the Republic of South Africa, said in an ad dress here Tuesday. Speaking before the Med ford Rotary club at a lunch eon meeting at the Rogue Val ley Country club, Miss Day ton said that alongside a fine university in a South African city could be found areas of extreme poverty. Here the people are segre gated into so-called "loca tions" and the separation is total. The Africans, however, are wonderful and are vital ly concerned with the future of their country. The speaker talked with refugees from the Congo and observed that much of the troubles today in that area is due to the unsettled condi tion of dislocated people. South Africa is a young coun try with growing pains; re sembles greatly the U.S. mid west country. The cry of Africa for Afri cans does not take into con sideration the fact that Euro peans were first in the south ern area and have every right to remain. There are, Miss Dayton observed, 15 million people living in South Afri cans. Education of the latter is a long process which ac counts for the fact that to day we see a highly devel oped European civilization side-by-side with primitive na tive culture. Deanne Dayton graduated from Pacific university at Forest Grove, and studied in South Africa on a Rotary Foundation Fellowship. S.-Now that the man is willing to marry her, she refuses. Wanda S.-Maybe some day I will but not under this cloud. Mrs. L. S.-My 18-year-old daughter has gotten herself into such a mess that life doesn't seem worth living any more for either of us. She's pregnant by a mar ried man. He put up the money for an illegal opera tion which was performed in another country. The cost was in the thousands. But now we learn that she must have been carrying twins, for she's still pregnant despite the surgery. Since the man and his wife are childless and es tranged, they have offered to get a divorce so that he can marry Wanda and legitima tize the child. This seems like the best way out. Wanda S.-In spite of the terrible state I'm in at pres ent, I'm able to look ahead. This is due to some advice I've been getting at the shel ter where I'm awaiting the birth of this child. My mother thinks it's ridiculous, but I don't. They've helped me see how mixed up I am. This man is 33 and I found him such a comfort during the year after my father's death. But the psychologist has pointed out to me that I never loved Bill and that I'm not able to love anyone because I'm so full of anger against my mother, and even against myself. I want to sign the baby away for adoption, as the agency suggests, and then get myself straightened out emotionally. The Council: The longer we work at this let's-talk-it-over business, the more we are heartened by the good advice our readers get from the ac credited agencies we refer them to. Of course we only inject the name of an organ ization as a third "arm," in cases where a person's own two hands may not be able to handle the whole load. Us ually we aim to suggest an okay approach to take on the spot, and on the double. Invited to consider Wanda's problem at this crucial point, we can't do much more than urge her mother to thank her stars that the girl is at last in the care of experts. It would be madness and folly to backtrack into the bog from which Wanda is painfully ex tricating herself. The girl is emotionally rocky, if not ill. The man also is no great shakes as a specimen of men tal and moral health. Why compound the "felony"? Psy chiatrists repeatedly warn their patients not to quite school, while under treatment. Wanda is now, and will be for a while, under the sort of care which will, with luck, prepare her to make sound choices and judgments. At present she is hardly a whole person, and is not ready to be an adequate wife or moth er to anyone-regardless of her sexual excursions. An extra dividend may ac crue from following the ad vice of the shelter staff. This will be some attention for Mrs. S. Her state of depres sion borders on the suicidal as she describes her life as not worth living. As part of their counseling, Wanda's ad visors will certainly bring in her mother a few times. Per haps that mountain of "anger1 can be shaved down to a mole hill. We tack on here a finding of the Youth Consultation Service of the Episcopal Dio cese of New York that most of the hundreds of girls they help place their infants for adoption, return home, event ually marry, and "send us pictures of their husbands and babies. Wilson Assisting State Legislators H. Dewey Wilson, Medford attorney, is in Salem this week to assist state legisla tors with problems of bill drafting and technical legal advice. He is one of the volunteers for the Oregon State Bar's program of legal service to the legislature. Wilson, one of 21 lawyers chosen for the program, will remain in Salem for two weeks. American television view ers will again see a perform ance of gagaku, the delicate symphonic music of ancient Japan, played by the Imperial Court musicians on the grounds of the Imperial Pal ace; bugaku, an old highly stylized Japanese dance; bun raku, the traditional Japanese Puppet Theatre; and native fisherwomcn singing as they work along Katagai Beach. The Western segments of the program feature the Phil harmonic performing works by Beethoven and Ravel. Also of note on Thursday a schedule is the "Premiere" drama at 10 p.m. on KBES TV.
