Maida U. - Late in life my brother was foolisn enough to marry a spinster of 55. He was a traveling man, running er ranus all over the continent lor his tirm, but he was near ing retirement age and he wanted to settle down. As for her, she just wanted to have her name changea, get Un title of "Mrs." and a wedding ring. Because, as it turns out, she acts as though she can't stand having him around It hurts me to see what lies ahead for my brother. Maybe The Council can tell my sis ter-in-law a thing or two on what marriage means and how to treat a husband. Mrs. G. U. - When a wom an my age changes the whole pattern of her life she certain ly expects it to be a big im provement, eise shed leave matters as is. Two years be fore he retired my husband painted a glorious picture for me. He had friends all over the world, he said, and if I married him we'd be compan ions on interesting trips, and establish a little home to rest up in, in between our jaunts. He was tired of furnished rooms, he said, and didn't want to move in with his sis ter. While he continued to work, I went ahead with my end of the bargain. We were married and he moved into my apartment. And that's all. He has no friends, there are no trips. He just sits around. Now that 1 have such a steady diet of bis company I realize how empty and boring he really is. The Council: Anyone would resent the continuous presence of a man who resembles an other log of wood in front of the fireplace. Only he doesn't burn. His wife does! It's obvious that each of these middle-age "contrae-: tors" threw a bit of powder in the other's eyes, in. the i form of little white lies. To get what each wanted, s-he a "marital status," he a "home port," they portrayed selves which just didn't, and still don't, exist. Sister Maida only has eyes for Mrs. U.'s defalcations on the account. But obviously Mr. U. "overdrew" too. He hasn't ' all those interesting friends, nor any yen to go places and oo things. He's set and just wants to stay "set." Or does he? Maybe he just wants to be drawn out. It seems impossible that a man who has spent most of his life traveling call really be as un interesting as Mrs. U. paints him. Certainly he knows some geography, has struck up con versations with colorful peo ple, has had unusual adven tures-if only from missing a train. And there must have been "moments of glory," when he turned up in the nick. But sensing his wife's general displeasure with him, he retreats into his shell, clams up now. Willi a what's- thc-usc shrug, he gives up. We agree with Maida that Mrs. U. is unfair to give up, too. As a wile she must re alise thai her job is to bring out lite "best" in Mr. U. Cruel ly she decides that he lias no best. Actually he may be dazed into a paralysis of de spair by the contrast, so hard to lake, between his former active life and the "waste land" of retirement. Because lie was away so much, his wife never really knew him and now, rather than bother, she dismisses him as "boring." If Mrs. U. has any human ity in her, never mind love, she will turn to this man and uncover, one by one, his fine qualities to appreciate. This will give him the confidence to reach out for post-retirement activities, either as vol unteer or job-holder, outside the home. Mr. U. isn't dull. With some warmth from Mrs. U he'll glow.
