I Gl Rehabilitation Dale Extended Portland - The general deadline for vocational re habilitation training for dis abled Korean conflict vet erans has been eliminated, according to n. J. Novotny, manager, Portland Veterans Administration regional of fice. The deadline for comple tion of such training formerly was Jan. 31, ltim, or nine years after being separated from Ihe armed forces, which ever was earlier. Under terms of a law pass ed by the last Congress, a vet eran now has nine years after discharge from the armed forces in which to complete his trailing, with no cut-off deadline at an earlier date. Eligible disabled Korean conflict veterans may receive training, of such character and length as necessary to restore their ability to work, up to four years and in some cases exceeding four ears. Before starting iheir train ing they must be interviewed and tested by VA counselors to determine their aptitudes and Interests. The training will be at gov ernment expense and in ad dition the veteran may re ceive subsistence allowances as well as the disability com pensation. The eligible veterans may enroll in svhools or colleges, take on-the-job training or institutional on-tlie farm train ing or enter other programs which combine classroom and on-the-job training. National Forest Salvage Timber Sales Reach 294 Portland One hundred seventy-five million board feet of timber blown down in the Columbus Day windstorm, has been sold in 294 sales on the national forests of Oregon and Washington, according to J. Herbert Stone, regional forester, U.S. Forest service, Portland. The Siuslaw National for est, which incurred the most blowdown, has sold 83 million feet in 118 sales, and 61 more sales involving 123 million feet will be made by the end of March. Siuslaw National Forest Supervisor S. T. Moore plans to sell nearly all the concentrated blowdown by July 1, except for 150-200 million board feet in remote areas such as between the Smith and Umpqua rivers. Plans have been made to con struct access roads, with ap propriated money, into the area in order to make salvage economically feasible. Sales volumes do not in clude timber incorporated in to existing sales through reg ular adjustment procedures, Stone said. A preponderance of small sales to date has speeded up removal of the blowdown ma terial. Proximity of roads and weather conditions have been important factors in the sal vage effort. An estimated 1.450,000.000 board feet of timber was felled by the storm in the na tional forests of Oregon and Washington. The Forest serv ice plans to salvage 70 per cent of the blowdown by May, 1064.
