Shasta - Trucks may come and trucks may go but logging trucks go on forever in Mt. Shasta, Calif. According to a reliable source, a logging truck goes cither loaded or empty down or up the main street on an average of one every three minutes. That's 240 trips in a 12-hour period. There are ap proximately 60 trucks on the road in this immediate vicin ity each averaging two trips to the woods and back each day, and hauling to different mills. The usual haul for Kimberly-Clark Corp., Mt. Shasta mill is about 20 miles one way and the average load is 5.000 board feet for cedar and 6,000 for Douglas fir. They come from the north and south, the east and the west, but they all pass through Mt. Shasta. Oth er haulers come from Weed, Yrcka, Redding, Burney, Dunsmuir, Etna, Montague, Klamath Falls, Medford, Ash land, and Grants Pass. Plans Cold Deck Ernie Swift, general mana ger of Kimberly-Clark Corp., Mt. Shasta mill, said the com pany usually plans to have 3.3 million board feet in the cold decks with about 8 million board feet stored for winter milling. They cut about 2 5 million board feet a month. It is planned to run two shifts in the mill this winter with around 85 men employed. Floyd W. Porteous is the main logging contractor for Kimberly-Clark in Mt. Shasta, having nine trucks of his own on the road. Porteous does all his own logging from laying out roads and felling the tim ber to hauling and dumping at the mill pond. The finished lumber shipped all over the United States. Three million board feet a month is shipped out of Mt. Shasta mill and as much is shipped by truck as by rail. There are several coast rigs hauling t o southern Cali fornia. Used for Pencil Stock Cedar milled is used for pencil stock and core stock for low cost doors. Other lum ber from this area is used for dors, framing, sheeting and finished lumber, for the many frame and wooden buildings and homes being built all over the U. S. Those in the "know" say Mt. Shasta is a thriving log ging town. The economy is good even though snows shut down the logging during the winter. A trip around town over a week end shows an as tonishing number of logging trucks parked in yards, drive- Three Tracts of BLM Timber Are Sold at Auction Three tracts containing 5, 737,000 board feet of timber were sold by the Medford dis trict of the bureau of land management last week.
