The Comets of Central Point spurned the spoiler as pirations of the Ashland Grizzlies by subduing the Lithia city cagers 69 to 57 here. It was the third verdict for Crater over Ashland in the 1963 campaign. Crater bolstered its margin over the second place posses sor when Grants Pass moved into the No. 2 position by beating Klamath Falls 58 to 54. The battle here was closely fought through the first half. Crater pulled to a nine-point lead in the third quarter, saw it narrow to four in the open ing moments of the final chap ter than stretched up a 16 point spread with less than three minutes left to play. The Comets were headed by the field bucketing of Mike Glines, Howard Tomlinson and Louis Alvarez, the free shot work of Tomlinson and Pat Pepper and the rebound ing of Tomlinson and Bran son). They had some fine floor play by Alvarez, Glines and Pepper and some terrific and steady service in reserve roles by Neil Rivcnberg and Darryl Summerfield proved important to the triumph. Lead switched hands five times in the tussle. The Co mets were in front at half time 33 to 31 and the third rest stop 48 to 41 after a 14-all first quarter knot. Tomlinson dumped in a rebound basket with 3',2 minutes left in the third quarler to give the Co mets the lead for good at 39 to 38. Tomlinson made 14 out of 16 free shot tries and had 24 points to top all scorers. Glines had 14 points, Alvarez 12 and Pepper 10. Pepper put in eight of 10 free heaves. Rick Pierce threw in 12 Ash land markers and Tod Hess 11. Sixteen rebounds were cleared by Tomlinson for the Fireballs. Bransom took off nine as Crater had 42 to 34 edge on the boards. Gale Tep per snagged seven and Rick Pierce six for Ashland. The fracas had its sparkling moments with some sensation al steals by Alvarez and Glines and spectacular play making by the Comets. But, it was marred by frequent trips to the free throw stripes as referees Harold Douglas and Jim Bocchi tooted 50 fouls, 28 on Ashland and 22 on the Comets. Crater used the giflers to account for most of its mar ping in the scoring. The Fire balls put in 29 of 43 free tries and the Grizzlies 19 to 32. The Comets had 20 field goals to 19 by the Ashlanders. Free shots were effecetive for the Comets in building their wide fourth period bulge and in holding off Ashland at tempts to close the gap. Crater had a nine-point dif ference at 50 to 41 in the opening seconds of the foi'rth stanza when Tomlinson iMt from close range after Al varez drove in and passed. Ashland whacked it to 50 to 45 on a Dale Tepper goal and Tod Hess swipe and driver. Pepper countered with a free toss but Hess picked up two free trip" for 51 to 47. Alvarex netted a driver and a free point and Glines a long push bucket for 56 to 47. Pierce and Rivenberg traded pairs of free casts. Pepper hemped three free tallies and Tomlinson two and Tomlinson registered a tip-in for 65 to 49. Ashland had the edge in floor play and was the stead ier in the early going of the fray. "But, Crater kept close through its opportunities at the gift line. Lead switched three times in the opening quarter. Ashland once was ahead by 10 to 5. Then Crater fought in front 14 to 13. Tomlinson scored off the second quarter tipoff for the Central Pointers. Then Alvar ez rebounded from the Ash land board and passed to Glines who fed the ball back to him for a goal on a fiery fast break. That gave Crater a lead which it held through the second quarter. The Com ets now were clicking better but picked up fouls and Ash land, although it fell behind Joey Archer Wins Fight New York - lUPli - Cool Joey Archer, a boxer-puncher with hopes of a middleweight title fight, handed tough but un polished Blair Richards, the Canadian champion, a boxing lesson over 10 rounds Satur day night in their nationally televised bout at Madison Square Garden. It was strictly a match be tween a boxer and a puncher and the boxer won by a wide margin. Both referee Mark Conn and Judge Tonny Rossi called it 8-2 in Archer's favor and the other judge, Nick Gamboli, gave it to Archer, 8-1-1. United Press Interna tional agreed, 7-2-1. Richardson, a Bible stu dent from Nova Scotia, made his best showing in the sec ond round when he shook Archer with a long right to the head early in the session. After that, he became pro gressively more frustrated with Joey's style and seemed content to get the fight over with as painlessly as possible. Archer weighed 160 pounds and Richardson 1 58 'i .
