UU TV HOME Simply CIlfJUM C 772-8822 VflfcfcW Boxer's Devotion to Master Equaled Only by Courage The expression, "hang-dog look" or "sad-eyed hound," never could apply to that popular breed of dog wc know as the "boxer, whose popu larity during the last few years testifies to the desira bility of this breed of canine. Those who know the boxer best love him the most, and their affection Is well deserv ed, lor the dog's faithfulness and devotion to his master is only equalled by his courage and his loyalty. In old German and Eng lish castles, woven in tapes. tries that adorned those mus ty walls, were crude images of sturdy, smooth haired dogs fighting wild boars. There can be little doubt but that what the dog represented was the boxer. Some of those old tapestries are known to have been made over 100 years ago. Some picture? showed the dog engaged with others of its kind in the old, so-called t'sport" of dog-fighting; all were obviously boxers, indi cating the courage and brav ery typical of today's boxer. At one time the boxer dog was the preferred breed for police work, and were so used in Germany. This work required bravery, strength and tremendous aggressive ness, as well as courage and a high degree of animal in telligence, all of which this breed of canine has in plen tiful measure. The boxer breed of dog probably reached its gritest ijcriecuon in uerman.- as long as four centuries ago It would seem logical to sup pose the boxer would have acquired a German name, but the word "boxer" is typically English. Investigation has in dicated the boxer has many traits and characteristics, and considerable in common with the old "fighting docs" nf Tibet. A cousin to the bull dog, the boxer's ancestry goes back a long ways before ' e breed was Introduced into Europe about 400 years ago. the boxers high couraec. stamina and strength must have made the contest be tween two of the animals a terrible and bloody affair. Too bad that man, even hun dreds ot years ago, was cruel enough to force such faithful creatures to fight until one or both were dead. This canine king of dogdom carries his square, black masked head proudly; he moves with the grace and ease of an aristocrat; he dis plays at' all times a friendly affection for his master and his household. He is always alert, fearless, faithful, hon est and loyal, but brave and determined when aroused. The boxer is a little distrust ful of strangers but true and devoted to his master and those with whom he is asso ciated. This breed of dog, even when very old, is never false or treacherous - a trait not too common in many dog breeds. There has always been con siderable conjecture regarding the reason why this breed of dog was named "boxer." One very plausible explana tion, probably as near corr A as is now possible to estab lish, dates back to the days of "bull-baiting" and "dog fighting" when tlie dog would rear up on his hind legs, wav- ing the from paws in much me same aiuiunc as mai as sumed by a human prize fighter. To the boxer's everlasting credit let it be raid he fights fair, for he is an honoraLlc animal - true to his friends and tolerant with his enemies.
