Home economist Reba Staggs

extra touches that make a
special meal.
The only difference be

New Hair
Fashions
Free, Easy
United Press International
Romantic belle hair fash
ions will add the crowning
element of grace and ease to
the smart young look in the
fashion picture for spring and
summer, according to the of
ficial hair committee of the
National Hairdressers and
Cosmetologists Association.
The new fashions have a free
and easy down line of bounc
ing waves and curls for day
time wear. For evening, the
waves can be brushed up.
The "chic sheik" look
makes the deepest impressions
on spring millinery. The look,
inspired by the Knight of
Araby, brings back draped
turbans, frezzes and chimmon
swathed helmets.
Another hat favorite for
spring: the sailor. Included:
big sailors, perky small sail
tors and slouch sailors, like
the hat of the South American
gaucho.
Suede's in the parade of
prints that will be going to
milady's head in the spring.
Jacques Contoux's abstract
designs are the basis for a
collection of space-inspired
jewels for spring tt be launch
ed in Paris by American
jeweler Fred Wander. The
clusters of missile, star and
moon silhouettes combine pre
cious and semi-precious stones.
One sample: lapis-lazuli and
jade are combined with rock
like surface dulled gold. Dia
mond stars set on lapis-la
zuli make another brooch. A
third cluster, titled explosion,
combines lapis, platinum and
diamonds.

Fine Art of Pleasure
Extinct, Says Author
By JOAN SWEENEY

Los Angelcs-fllPD-The fine

written a new book devoted
to a time when that art had
reached a zenith P aril in
the 1890's.
Of that era, she said, "It
appealed to me because it was
tremendously aware of living
aware of the adventures of
the mind. It was sensitive, in
tellcctual, elegant but not
stuffy."

of conversation hardly exists
any more.
Le Belle Epoque was a time
of leisure. Today, we rush
about like mad as though we
are almost afraid to sit still
and read a book, as the
author sees it.
And in the haste, pleasure
is lost. Instead of jetting back
to her New York home, she
recently took the train. She
liked to see the changing
countryside.
"But when I tell people
I'm going home via the train,
they act like I'm going home
via the covered wagon," she
said.
Book Is Departure
Miss Skinner's new book is
a departure from her previ
ous volumes of humorous per
sonal reminiscences.
Her writing habits would
delight any aspiring author.
She said that she often re
tired to a cabin on a relative
ly remote section of the Long
Island shore to write.
"I go there and sharpen
pencils for awhile," she said.
"Then there'll be a wind and
I'll go outside. Then the tide
is just right for a swim be
cause when the tide is low
you can walk practically to
Connecticut to get damp.
Then it's time for lunch. By
the end of the day I have
written, at most, one page.
And I read it the next day
and tear it up."
Miss Skinner explained
how one of her best known
books "When Our Hearts
Were Young and Gay," came
about.
Movie Inspired Book
"I had gone to see the
movie of 'My Sister Eileen'
and what happened to them
was no more fantastic than
what happened to Emily and
me," she said.
Emily Kimbrough was co
author of the collaboration
itself, she said. "Our styles
were enough alike so that it
was easy. I don't even remem
ber now what she wrote and
what I wrote."
It is an unwritten law of
the magazine world that
manuscripts be submitted to
only one periodical at a time.
"But," said Miss Skinner,
"Emily and I thought no one
would buy the book.
"In our naivete we sent it
off to the famous magazines,
and they all accepted it."
