MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8. 1963 Bootlegging Topic Of Local Meeting The "significant increase in bootlegging in the United States," was emphasized by Pete Beyer, of the National Distillers Products company, when he recently spoke be fore a meeting of the Senior Golf association at the Rogue Valley Country club. "Bootlegging and Taxation" was the subject of Beyer's talk, and he listed the losses to the government resulting from the increases in boot legging, which he maintained are proportionate to increases in taxes on whiskey. Beyer went on to examine the present price structure in Oregon and showed where on one brand of whiskey, as an example, it was necessary to absorb the last IS cents in price to maintain a position in the market. The brand of which he spoke has enjoyed a fine position in the market for many years, he said. MM Alvarei Swelling in Armpit Many a mother has asked me anxiously why her appar ent healthy and peppy daugh- ii" ter has a nod- W -,V u 1 e ' n 0 n e T T , it' A armpit a I "" - ' (J nodule that ea.ch month ' swells up and gets tender just as the girl's breasts do. When the J mothers have gone for medi cal advice, some doctors hint ed at cancer, while some thought of a beginning infec tious mononucleosis (a disease usually of young persons in which there is fever, great fatigue, enlarged nodes in the armpit and neck and groin and disability for several months) and some scared the family by talking of Hodg kin's disease (a cancer-like disease of young people). Actually, in these types of cases the girl is much too young for ordinary cancer, and if she had infectious mon onucleosis she would feel mis erable, she would be ill, cer tain diagnostic changes could easily be found in her blood and many lymph nodes i (glands) would be enlarged, J not only in her armpit but j in her neck and groins. Sim ilarly, if she had Hodgkin's disease, many nodes would be I enlarged; an ' x-ray film of her chest would probably I show big nodes and a blood I test - the red blood scdimen- tation rate ("sed rate") would "be up, ' showing tne presence of a serious disease. I should say that usually when for some time an active girl has one swelling in her armpit which gets sore for a few days each month, the di agnosis is obvious: she has an extra bit of breast tissue there. I should say that never in my life did I see a cancer form in such a situation, so I doubt if a woman with such a con dition should worry about this possibility. Treatment of Cancer ' An article by Dr. Gilbert , i ' AND WHEN MY HITCH M IS OVER, THE WARRANTY j ON MY NEW VALIANT WILL STILL BE IN EFFECTlJ If the pfc had bought some other make of cat before his 3-year enlistment, the warranty on it would be long dead when he got out. But his Valiant Warranty will still have two years to go. Valiant has America's longest and best new-cat warranty-5 years or 50,000 miles. H. Gletcher of Houston, Tex., discusses the Cobalt-60 unit, sometimes called a "bomb" because the radioactive cobalt is enclosed in a big metal bar- j rel-like case hanging from a strong metal stand. Cobalt supplies much of the same i type of healing radiation giv- j en off by radium. - I This simple apparatus (bomb) has proven to be so useful and so easily kept in good running order that there are now some 1,200 cobalt units in use. Today, to a large extent, the cobalt radiation has taken the place of the old radium emanation. The new type of treatment is particu larly helpful in cases of cancer in the space back of the nose and throat. It also is very helpful in getting rid of dis tressing symptoms such as the pain of cancer. Often its use prolongs life, and in many cases it cures. Another type of so-called super-voltage treatment is giv en with x-ray machines which can now generate energies up to 25 million volts. Other types of machines generate 35 million volts. Fifty years ago, a good x-ray machine produced perhaps 50 thousand volts of energy. As Dr. Fletch er says, 80 per cent of the cancer patients he and his as sociates treat are now given super-voltage x-ray treatment. It has greatly improved the results obtained in cases of cancer in the back of the throat, the urinary bladder and the neck of the womb. A great advantage of using super-voltage machines is that with them the skin tolerates a much larger dose of the rays, and a larger dose of the rays is what we need to kill off the cancer cells. In the early days of radiation treat ment, the expert could not kill all of the cells in a cancer deep in the body because if he were to use a big enough dose he would burn the skin. It was this burning of the skin that many years ago gave x-rays a bad name. Today burning Is rare. Patients with cancer should know that no type of radiation is of value in those cases in which the cancer is not sensi tive to radiation (the cancer cells are not killed by rays). Also, patients with a cancer that has come back after radi ation will probably not toler ate more radiation. Such treat ment would bring only more trouble, perhaps severe. In his booklet, "What We Know About Cancer," Dr. Al varez lists the 19 danger sig nals older persons must not ignore. You may obtain a copy of this booklet by sending 25 cents and a stamped, self addressed envelope with your request to Dr. Walter C. Al varez, Dept. MMT, Box 957, Des Moines 4, Iowa.
