Her husband was an alcoholic and was found holed up in a motel with a barmaid, both in a stupefied condition. My wife and I helped her extricate herself from that mess of a marriage, because we realized Joan, and I myself, had been completely fooled by her hus band. He had revealed no sign of weakness while he courted her and during their engage ment period. Hut now she's In danger of walking into the same fire. This time it's with her eyes open. She's attracted to a man who giving her a big rusn, but .who admits he needs "a few under his belt" before he feels right. She ought to run a mile. Instead she feels he needs a loving wife and she's ready. This time she'd better not count on me. e Joan B. - I know Lou al most four years, which is 20 times longer than I knew my former husband. He's a fine, sensitive fellow, a perfect gentleman. He explained that he was always able to drink on a take-it-or-leave-it basis until he went into the Insur ance business five years ago. Then he noticed he did a much better job when he was fortified with some fire-water and he got into the habit of fueling up. But since he's been in love OH OH OH OH BOY! BOYI BOY! BOY! OH BOY! OH BOY! OH BOY! OH BOY! OH BOY! OH BOYI BARKER'S neat sale of men' clothing! out and do a good sales job with or without a drink. I'm able to give him confidence in himself. With me at his side and in his home, he'll have that certain peace which gives a man strength. Already his total imbibing gets less each week. I'm sure he'll master the urge. The Council Let's not pret ty up the problem. If Lou can' not function properly without a swig of the bubbly, he s an alcoholic. And no one should marry an alcoholic in the hope of reforming him. It can't be done that way Roger appeals to us to dis suade his sister and we 11 try. At the same time, since she is so drawn to this man, we'll offer her some hope. If Lou wants to marry her badly enough, he'll go for help and treatment. He can get it through individual psycho- therapy, or group therapy, or group inspiration and activity such as is offered in Alco holics Anonymous. Then if he proven that he can stay dry for at least a full year, pre ferably two, Joan can venture to marry him. Should the same trouble rear its ugly head later, they'd know where to go and how to pro ceed toward a "cure. Most important, Joan wouldn't try to tackle it alone. No can do. Psychologists find that alco holics, as a group, are unmar- riageable because they are basically selfish. Instead of working hard to bolster their own spirits through achieve ment, through serving and caring for others, they indulge themselves in escape and sweet forgetfulness via dis tilled spirits. This dumps all their problems on others, and makes them the center of at tention. When they marry it's for the sake of what a woman can do for them, not what they can do for her. So Roger is kind to try to trip Joan up at this point. But he raises another im portant question. What is there about Joan which causes her to feel drawn to drinking men? That s a good question for her to bring to a guidance counselor. One promi n e n t practitioner claims that these women fall into two groups. They re cither martyrs or mammas" as types. Fire Instructors Organize in Area The initial meeting for area fire instructors from Jackson and Josephine coun ties was held Monday night in the Medford fire department building. About 23 persons attended. Purpose of the group is to further better firemanship training for structural type fires and will be made up of interested persons, particular ly from municipal and rural fire protection groups. They will evaluate new equipment, teach new fire-fighting meth ods, exchange information and conduct area schools. The coordinator for the or ganization Is Vernon Ritchie of the Medford fire depart ment, through the state voca tional education department and the Oregon State Fire men Instructors association. The first area school will be held May 11 and 12 in the White City area when control of liquid inflammables will be demonstrated. Robert Walker, Central Point rural tire department, is president of the newly form ed group; Norman Nelson, Medford, is vice president, and Arlo Miller, Ashland, is secretary. Attending last night's meet ing were representatives from Ashland, Medford, Jackson ville, Eagle Point and Central Point city and rural fi r e de partments. I By DELOS SMITH UPI Scienca Editor New York tUPD- There is a new and still highly experi mental drug which produces an odd but h o p e ful re sult. It doesn't attack cancer but arrests it stops it cold in its tracks, so to speak. This is strict ly a labora- utlos smith lory pnenoiii- enon so far, you must keep in mind. But when the answer to human cancer does come eventually, it probably will grow out of laboratory phe nomena and the experiments they engender. The drug is MPT which is a contraction of 1,4-dimethyl- 1.4-diphcnyl-2-tetrazene. The cancers it stops cold (though temporarily) are an experi mental m a in m a r y cancer which Is kept going by trans plantation to succeeding gen erations of mice and a spon taneous mouse mammary can cer. Without treatment mice bearing Hie experimental can cer survive 30 days on the average. The spontaneoi:'' can cer permits a survival period of 37 days after its first ap pearance. THIO-TEPA is an anti-cancer drug now used in human patients. It will prolong mouse survival with the ex perimental cancer to 50 days, and with the spontaneous can cer it doesn't increase sur vival time at all. Double Survival Tinm But the new drug, MPT, doubles survival time from the experimental cancer when it is injected into the mice. When it Is mixed with their food and fed to them, it in creased survival time to about I no days, triple and more of the time the mice would have atii'vivrd without treatment. When fed to mice which developed mammary cancer spontaneously it increased survival time more than two fold and did almost as well when it was injected Into them. It hud another advantage over THIO-TEPA. It was ef fective over a wide range of dose levels These promising results were obtained In the Lederle Laboratories, Pearl River, N. Y., by Adolph W. Vogel, Adolph E. Sloboda, Andrew S. Tomcufcik and Ralph G. Child. They came across MPT when routinely screening for anti-cancer activity all com pounds of similar structure to 3,3-dimethyl-l-phenyltriazene which has anti-cancer activity but poisons the host as well as his cancer. They're not yet quite sure how to classify It chemically although it doesn't appear to be an alkylating agent. These and the anti-folic compounds are now in use against human cancers but they have to be used selectively and with much caution because they can destroy bone marrow with fatal consequences. No Reaction MPT so far has shown no reaction on bone marrow. When this is coupled with it achieving the longest surviv al time of mice bearing the experimental cancer yet re corded, you see why chemists are eager to push their studies of It. The puzzle is in how it does what it does. In no instance has any cancerous tissue been destroyed. Its activity is to "hold growth in abeyance to a size tolerated by the host" for periods of months which in mice is equivalent to years in human beings. MPT has been entirely in effective against two other kinds of experimental cancer. Cancer scientists, however, on the basis of their present knowledge, believe there will never be a single chemical compound effective against a!! kinds oi cancers. They'd gladly settle for compounds which are effective against only one or a few.
