outstanding events of this
television season is scheduled

edy "Pygmalion," starring
Julie Harris and James Don
ald, will be presented on the

The TV premiere of ''Pyg
malion" will come almost 50
years after its first stage per
formance in Vienna in 1913.
Such actresses an Lynn Fon
tanne, Gertrude Lawrence
and Wendy Hiller have since
played the part of Eliza. Most
recently Richard Rodgcrs and
Oscar Hammerstein II based
their record-breaking musical
"My Fair Lady" on Shaw's
play, with Julie Andrews and
Rex Harrison in the leading
roles.
Shaw derived the title of
"Pygmalion" from the Latin
poet, Ovid, whose Pygmalion
created a beautiful statue,
Galatea, and then fell in love
with it. Shaw's Pygmalion is
Henry Higgins, an arrogant
professor of phonetics who
attempts, on a wager, to make
a fine lady of an ignorant
flower girl.
The cast includes Julie
Harris as Eliza Doolittle;
James Donald as Henry Hig

HERE IS A SIGNIFICANT STATEMENT MADE BY THE BUREAU OF EDUCA
TION RESEARCH OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON IN CONCLUDING ITS
CURRENT STUDY OF THE PHOENIX-TALENT DISTRICT.
"Should the Phoenix District desire to consolidate this may prove
to be a desirable arrangement. Some who look at the development
of the Medford area say that it is inevitable that eventually Phoe
nix and Medford will be part of the same municipality. In this
event, it would be highly desirable for the two systems to be
merged."
