Hi 4 M Iri V hi (i f i' MEDFORD The Medico I have recently seep sev eral middle-aged women with a cystitis, or inflammation of their urinary bladder so mild I advis ed leaving it alone- and a urologist agreed with me. In one of the c, se , the woman had , Jbeen treated Alvarei for week. with large doses of several strong antibiotics, and still there were a few bacteria left in her urine. It is interesting that in most of the cases the woman never did have troublesome symp toms, except perhaps on the first day or two of the illness. Then she may have had fre quency of urination with some burning, and nerhaDs a little bleeding. In none of the cases did the slight infection ol tne bladder scerr to be producing any general symp toms, sucn as those that might go with a slight cold. The woman felt well and she had no fever. That the few germs she had in her bladder were not doing her much, if any, harm was snown by the fact that there were no pus cells in her urine. In other words, the germs were not causing an inflam mation of the wall of the bladder. Every so often, when a study has been made A sev eral hundred women or sev eral hundred high school girls cnosen at random, bacteria have been found in the urine of a small percentage of them. In a recent article. Drs. C. M. Kunin and A. J. Paquin, Jr. and Elizabeth Zacha, R.N., reported a study of urinary tract infections found on ex amining 9,878 school chil dren. They found 54 of the girls and 2 of the boys with such an infection - in all but two of the cases without symptoms. A few of the chil dren had disease in their kid neys, and 7 were diabetic. Should Have Examination If a woman suddenly finds herself urinating frequently and with some burning, she should have a freshly passed sample of urine looked at un der the microscope, a id if there are many bacteria pres ent, she should have . physici an give her (usually) one of the sulfa types of antibiotic. If this does not quickly clear up the condition, the woman should be examined to see if there is some con dition present in either her urinary bladder or the kidney (such as kidney stones) that can keep the infection going. Also if the woman has had children and has been left with a torn perineum and a bladder hanging down - in which the urine stagnates and gets infected - an operation which will push her bladder up where it belongs may quickly give her relief. In other cases, her kidne. may have to be x-rayed, after she has taken a special dye. A urologist may have to look into the woman's bladder with his electrically lighted cystoscope to see if there is anything locally wrong. Worried Grandmother Many a grandmother writes me to say she is worried and distressed because she fears that her daughter is not feed ing the children the foods and vitamins they should be getting; or she show no de sire to take Johnny to a plas tic surgeon to have hit flar ing ears moved back close to his head; or she is not getting Clara's buck teeth cut down to siie; or she is not seeing to it that Bill's squinting eye is operated on and straight ened: or she is cnnnrnH w. cause he is not growing tall, or because Louise looks as if she were going soon to weigh 200 pounds, or perhaps be 8 feet tall. Perhapi anoth er child is stuttering, or an other who is still wetting the bed - and the mother is not doing anything about it. Usually, if I can . id time in which to write the grand mother, I tell her that while I feel just as she does that the child ought to be seen by a doctor and given the needed help, I fear that if her daughter shown nn -ion of taking a hint about caring for the child, nothing can be accomplished by meddling. rsr LETS GO FISHING 1937 CHEVY V, TON PICK-UP with Csmptf, A Cyl., Standard Transmission, Custom Cab, Good Tins A Rtal Buy LEA RAMBLER Fifth and B -left fhont MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFCRD, Roundup Emeritus Consultant tn Medicine Mayo tunic fcnieritus Professor of Medicine Mayo t'lliuc (Reenter and Tribune syndicate, 1961) Occasionally, Grandmother can accomplish something by offering, if she has the money, to pay for taking the child to a doctor or plastic surgeon or dentist.
