I us Professor of Medlclna Miyo Clinic - (Regular and Tribune Syndicate 1983) Reason for Auto Accldanti As a physician, I am always interested in reading about the psychic and medical proD- Jems of those many persons who while driving a car run into and p kill someone V on the high' way. Every year we in this country read much Aivire aDoui euoris that should be made to cut down the 37,000 deaths that take place each year on our streets and highways,- but nothing much seems ever to be done, and each year the number of terrible accidents remains about the same. Only when a state such as Connecticut gets tough with reckless drivers is the number of accidents lessened. I have read that no reduction in the terrible toll of highway accidents can be expected so long as there is no good rea son why a man in an elective position should make hund reds of enemies tor himself by taking away the licenses oi ail those persons who have shown repeatedly that they drive when drunk, or have the type of reckless personal ity that makes for fatal acci dents. Now I read that in Cleve land, Ohio, 86 of 132 drivers involved in fatal accidents were found to have had at least one previous traffic vio lation. The 86 bad drivers had been up 423 times for traffic violations, and 373 of their "tickets" had been for hazar dous maneuvers, like making a U turn on a busy street, or going through a stop-light or making a left turn from a lane on the right. These people had shown repeatedly that they were Just the sort of per sons who, by their unlawful and careless and unwise be- havior, were likely someday to kill and maim a car-full of people. What bothers me is that we do not often enough take away from such people their license to drive. Until we do take away the license of a per son who thinks nothing of racing past a stop sign and perhaps onto a main highway, we must go on having 37,000 fatal accidents a year, plus many more non-fatal ones. Nan S You'd think that when a girl steals your boy friend away she'd have enough delicacy not to rub salt into the wound. But Claire wants to gloat over her victory and watch me suf fer. I was going steady with Tony. Claire stopped over in New York last summer on her way to Maine where she had a camp job. Naturally I introduced Tony to her. By the very next day I was crowded out. It seems they had known each other as chil dren and had lost track. The decent thing for Claire to do would have been to drum up her own date in New York. Instead she calmly ac cepted Tony's invitation, while he fixed me up with his cousin. And now, the clincher, She invites me to be maid-of-honor at the wedding. I won't even go. - Clair W Nan just isn't thinking straight. 1 wish she'd get over the shell-shock she seems to have. Can't she real ize it was Fate that made her the go-between for Tony and me? He and I grew up on Gov ernors Island in the New York City harbor. Our fathers were stationed there on Army duty. We used to travel the ferry to the mainland to get to school. Then my Dad was transferred to Texas. So I hadn't seen Tony since I was 10 and he was 16. Meeting like that in New York just bowled us over. And he wasn't engaged to Nan. We had a right to each other. I thought Nan would take it the right way. She has other friends. Tony's cousin likes her a Jot and he's going to be best man. I hope she recon siders. t Tht Councils We can't de cide whether to get out the crying-towel for Nan or sing her an album of the torch- songs written about her prob lem. To get into the nood Nan, run through a few chor uses of "I'm dancing with tears in my eyes,", or "There he goes, my best pal, there she goes, my best ' gal, and here am I, broken hearted." Or words to that effect. Then, having poured it all out, wrung your feelings dry, you should be able to view what happened to the tune of "La Vie en Rose." For the sun really shines bright. Tony may have been her boy friend but he wasn't "stolen" away. He simply ex perienced a new emotion when he re encountered Claire, a sensation he knew was different from his feelings about Nan. The latter will understand this better when it happens to her. There's no comparison between the pleas ant and polite relationship of "going-with" and the peace ful and positive emotion of "this-is-it" the real thing. We second Claire s pitch in behalf of Fate. Right now Nan's wound is still raw, but it's her own salt tears that are keeping it fresh. It's not sour grapes to say it's all for the best. 1 It's sweet reason. Tony didn't feel la Grande Passion for her. He felt it for Claire. Isn't it lucky to have found that out now, in stead of after one of those "compromise" (because no one better has. turned up!) mar riages? We hope Nan attends the wedding like a good friend and a good sport. As to wheth er to be maid-of-honor, that's a sub-division of the main problem which she can de cide for herself, once she ac cents the fact that Tony was never for her. He was for Claire. By the way. Nan, what sort of a fellow is Tony's cousin? Any chance that he'll be the best man for you too? Famous Paintings Will Be Displayed Atlanta. Ga.
