And that's lust what the ll I Mercer Raccabout did in 1912. This T-head speedster tore up the track to establish a record that has never been matched in the United States. A machine of perfection, every Mercer was sold with a money-back guar antee that it would do a mile in fifty-one seconds. That was quite a claim for nearly fifty years ago. Douglas MacArthur may have to be called on again to settle the Uiest wrangle between the two groups. MacArthur temporarily re stored peace on Jan. IS with tour-point agreement plan but a new dispute suddenly arose between both factions Friday over the sanctioning of open track and field meets. Actually, the AAU and NCAA were supposed to sign peace treaty Friday but wound up in disagreement In stead over Interpretation of MacArthur's so-called articles of alliance. Claim Dual Rights The AAU assumed it would have sole sanctioning powers m open meets but officials of the NCAA supported U.S. Track and Field federation apparently felt the general's plan empowered them with dual sanctioning rights. The matter came to a head recently when several colleg es, including members of the far west Big Six conference, refused to permit their ath letes to compete in open meets unless the USTFF, as well as the AAU, granted sanctioning privileges. There is a reluctance on the part of both the AAU and NCAA to run to MacArthur with every Problem that aris es but in his agreement plan the general said his decision would be final in case of any further controversy.
