Henrv W. - Thp hnlol marfo a niislakc. She must believe me. Susan W. - For many years now I've been arrnmnanvinit my husband to a hotel in the roconos where the salesmen in his line have a his annnnl convention. His firm used to pay our expenses. Now, how ever, with the tax crackdown on expense - account allow ances, his employer said wives should stav h else so at their nwn vn.nu So thij year I stayed home. Lo and behold, a fnw Have after his return and his re port on how much he missed me, a card arrives from the hotel addressed to Mr anrf Mrs, Henry W. and saying how glad they were to enter tain us and hoping we'd re turn. He insists it's a clerical error. He says he shared the room with another salesman. But those fellows stick to gether, and now I'm really wondering. Henry W. - Here's a nice how-do-you-do. That hotel was so jammed the desk people were dizzy. This proves it. It was every man for himself and you either had to double up or scatter to other lodg ings. I couldn't get a single so I doubled with a fellow from Chicago. It would be terribly embar- rasing to have to contact him now, as well as the hotel, to get all this down in black and white lo convince my wife. In addition, it might start some thing in his wife's mind, too. Sue should trust me better than that. Believe me, if I were out lo cheat I wouldn't give my right name and ad dress, would I? And I'd stay someplace where nobody knew me. The letter she's worried about is just a form thing they send all guests automatically. The Council: If Susan has any other inklings of Henry's adventures in dalliance, then the incriminating letter from the hotel becomes Exhibit P or Q in the array she will eventually set before her lawyer. But if she's merely bored, restless, and feeling un sure of herself, she's balloon ing a trifle into an Incident she may regret. The mswer here boils down (if Susan will stop boiling) to trust. A wife who trusts her husband uncondit I o n a 1 1 y won't even listen to reports from the gal he was ship wrecked with on a desert isle. Call her a dope, but she knows (and keeps) her man. A wife with doubts, on the other hand, sees every nod or hello he extends to an at tractive female as a code be tween them for a future as signation. From Susan's story we'd say laugh the letter oft and forget it. Figure out what could have happened, and probably did. The Mr. and Mrs. heading may have been in the hotel files from prev ious years, and the typist nev er bothered to check this year's registration carefully. were reminded of a G.I. reading mail in his foxhole during tho Korean war. It was addressed to Mr. and Mrs. and asked them whether they'd like a representative to call with a demonstration of an electric vibrating ma chine for the home. It could honestly be a clerical error. Susan. On the other hand If sus picions assail you for other reasons, you may still want to call the hotel, check the records, and receive proof of Henry's c x p 1 a nation. But we're bark to what we said above. Will it be "proof"? As Henry Indicates, a man who is out to cheat covers his traces better than that. As Mrs. Rudyard Kipling might have said, "If you can keep your head ... if you can trust your husband . . . yours Is the triumph!"
