The taffy.pull was a winter Indoor snort II mnrla o of kitchen social event out of tne production of candy at home. A certain immmi friendly cooDeratinn wn fa- quired to convert molasses ana oilier ingredients from a stiff and balky mass into a spiraled coil of sweetness which was then set outside to cool and harden, while every one inside the house washed up. Once solidified. th roll could be crashed into pieces and presto, candy. Pushed Into Discard Mass production methods, the availability of rnnfpp- tions in vending machines everywncre, the bargain buys on candy at the supermarkets, hace Dushed the taffv.nnii mostly into the discard, ex cept as a stunt or a novelty, as a source for candy. But the desire of sweet stuff, the nation's candy manufacturers report, has been rolling along unabated. Sales for 1961, the latest year for which the U.S. depart ment of commerce had fig ures, were S1.23 billion a rer.. ord high. With more than 2. (MM vari eties of candy to choose from, consumers were averaging 17.2 pounds of candy prod ucts a year, and the consump tion graph line had been ris ing slightly each year for sev en years. As In every mass consumer Industry, competition among makers is high., New packag ing, new products flow con stantly through the markets, usually the results of careful research and preparation.
